Bengaluru, Jan 3: Karnataka Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Protection of Cattle Bill - 2020 is the ambitious act of BJP government in Karnataka. The BJP government intends to stop cow slaughter through this bill. For the same reason, despite fierce opposition by the opposition political parties this bill was presented in the legislative assembly and was passed. However, the BJP government does not have a majority in the legislative council. For the same reason, the passing of this bill created ruckus that ended in the sad suicide of deputy chairman S L Dharmegowda.
Now the state BJP government intends to implement this bill through a special ordinance. It is learnt that this bill is sent to the governor for approval.

State BJP unit has shared this information on its official Twitter handle. The post on its account says, "Honourable chief minister Yediyurappa has implemented the anti-cow slaughter act through an ordinance. In the next assembly session, we will implement a law against Love Jihad" - BJP state president Nalin Kumar Kateel.
Law minister J C Madhuswamy said that the decision to implement the anti-cow slaughter bill through an ordinance was taken in the cabinet meeting that was held on December 28 at the Vidhana Soudha auditorium under the leadership of chief minister B S Yediyurappa. He had also clarified that even after implementing the bill there will be no issues to sell the meat of buffalo and bull.
Madhuswamy also clarified that certain amendments have been made to the 1964 Act of Prevention of Cow Slaughter and Protection of Cattle. In the 1964 Act, there was a provision to slaughter cows, buffalo and bulls that were aged 12 years and above. According to the recent amendment, slaughtering cows and ox is totally banned. However, bull and buffaloes can be slaughtered after they attain the age of 13 years. We do not prohibit anyone from eating cow meat.
Madhuswamy also said, "In the 1964 anti-cow slaughter Act, there was no provision for punishment with regards to the slaughter of cows and protecting them. Now the authority is given to tahsildar and police. The old law was not stringent. In the present act, if the cows are transported illegally, they will be confiscated. The vehicle that is used to illegally transport cows can be taken back only through a bank guarantee."
Earlier, Nalin had informed that the state government is making all preparations to present the bill against Love Jihad.
Speaking to scribes, Nalin said, "In the special meeting that was held at Belagavi, the discussion was held on the subjects of banning cow slaughter and Love Jihad issue. Anti-cow slaughter act is already implemented. Action will be taken against Love Jihad in the coming days."
