Mangaluru City Corporation decides to seek land for drinking water

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Jan 1: The city corporation, at its general session held here on Thursday December 31 that was presided over by mayor Diwakar, decided to seek ten acres of land for supplying drinking water from the new dam at Adyar.

A new dam is being constructed downstream of the new dam at Thumbe. This will help augmentation of water storage between the two dams at Thumbe and Adyar. In order to create infrastructure needed to supply water from here to the city, city mayor Diwakar has written to Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner, seeking to hand over ten acres of land that is currently available at Adyar, to the city corporation. This was stated by whip, Premananda Shetty.

Mescom's express feeder line has been connected to the Thumbe pumping station. Still, unscheduled load shedding is resorted to frequently. Therefore, water supply to the city gets adversely affected, said Naveen D'Souza of the Congress. The mayor, who sought clarification from Mescom officials, asked them to resort to power cuts only after giving advance information to the water department of the corporation.

Deputy mayor Vedavathi, standing committee chairpersons Jagadish Shetty, Kiran Kumar, Sharath Kumar and Poornima were present.

Sudhir Shetty Kannur noted that the New Mangalore Port Trust president has volunteered to allot five acres of land to create facility to provide shelter to stray cattle and also to manage the facility. He said that this should be undertaken as soon as possible. Varun Chowta, who said that over a thousand cattle have been aimlessly moving around in Panambur area, therefore felt that opening of a cattle shelter for them is the need of the hour.

Abdul Ravoof, leader of the opposition, urged the corporation council to pass a resolution to rename the central railway station as Brahmashree Narayana Gurudev railway station. Sudhir Shetty Kannur pointed out that the Dalit Sangharsh Samithi has already demanded to name this station after Dr B R Ambedkar. He therefore expressed the view that it would be better if a suitable decision is taken after detailed discussion.

India is still a developing country because of our stupid expenditure. India is number one in beef export and our politicians are worried about protecting stray cattle......!!!!!???? This is nothing but wasting public money. If politicians are so much worried about the stray cattle let them take them to their own home and feed.

In reality there’s no problem in generating
Problem they don’t want to run all generators
    Because there’s less demand
Instead Of running 4 generators they are running 2 or 3 generators
And rationing power this is the tricks from power generating company

IF your drainage system is not OK and if you give permission to building which dispose waste water to open drains ..then you re supplying non potable water.
What happened to the recent reports which stated that the Mangalore municipality supplied water is not potable. Has this been rectified? This dam or new dam ..the final output is going to the same unless the fundamentals are fixed.

Radial wells (also known as French wells) would be a better option as land acquisition would not be required. These wells are in the river bed .The Municipal Corporation of Ahmedabad had supplied water to a population of 75 lakhs from such wells without water shortage and with a rainfall of just 20 inches per year (or less), before the city got Narmada water. Incidentally Mangalore is amongst the few cities to have a luxury of 2 rivers.
