Bengaluru, Dec 29: In a shocking development, Karnataka Legislative Council Deputy Chairman Sarapanahalli Lakshmaiah Dharme Gowda allegedly committed suicide by jumping from a moving train last night and his body was found near the railway track at Gunasagar village of Kadur taluk in Chikkamagalur district at 2 am on Tuesday.

The body was recovered near the railway track around 2 am on Tuesday. A suicide note was also found at the site. the police said. The contents of the suicide note is not disclosed.

"The matter is under investigation. There was a death note recovered from the site but cannot give out details of what's in it,’’ police said.

According to police sources, Dharme Gowda had asked his official gunman and escort to leave him alone on Monday evening. He had left his home in Shakarayapatna in his old personal Santro car with his driver and came to Gunasagar at around 6 pm. He then asked his driver to leave him as he had to meet someone.

His last call is said to have made enquiries about train timings from a friend in Kadur. When Dharme Gowda did not return home even late at night, his family is said to have alerted authorities who mounted a search. Based on cell signals, they located his body on the Mankenahalli railway track. The head was separated from the body.

His body has been sent for autopsy to Shivamogga and according to his brother Bhoje Gowda the last rites would be held at the Madagadakere farmhouse that the family owns in Shakaryapatna.

Dhame Gowda is survived by his wife and two children. He was elected to the Legislative Council in 2018 and after the Congress and JD(S) formed a coalition government with H D Kumaraswamy as the Chief Minister, Dharme Gowda was elected as the Deputy Chairman and Congress leader Pratapchandra Shetty as Chairman of the Upper House from June 2018.

Soft spoken and amiable S L Dharmegowda, who just celebrated his birthday on December 16 completing 65 years, hails from the politically powerful Vokkaliga community and belongs to the JD(S) headed by former Prime Minister and national president H D Deve Gowda and his son, the former Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy, who are also from the same community.

He was a close associate of JD(S) leader H D Kumaraswamy, and his father S R Lakshmaiah was a three-time MLA from Birur assembly constituency. Dharme Gowda himself had once been elected from there in 2004. His brother S L Bhoje Gowda is also an MLC from JD(S).

JD(S) supremo H D Deve Gowda said, “It is shocking to learn the news of Deputy Speaker of State Legislative Council and JD(S) leader S L Dharmegowda's suicide. He was a calm and decent man. This is a loss of the state.”

When the ruling BJP with the backing from JD(S) had moved a no-confidence motion against Pratapchandra Shetty and the Upper House had been abruptly adjourned resulting in the Yediyurappa government deciding to convene the Legislative Council session for a single day earlier this month to take up the no trust motion, Dharme Gowda sought to occupy the Chairman’s seat and conduct the proceedings. This resulted in uproarious scenes and jostling with Congress and BJP members pushing each other and Dharme Gowda was forcibly removed from his seat even as the Marshals tried in vain to intervene to prevent the chaos. The Chairman, who entered the house later, adjourned the session again and the no-confidence motion was not taken up at all.

The entire incident and the attempts by some Congress members and a section of the media to project the JD(S) leader as one who sought to usurp the Chairman’s seat with the support of BJP is said to have distressed Dharme Gowda.

Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa has expressed his condolences to the bereaved family at the tragic and untimely demise of the Deputy Chairman of the Council. His untimely demise is very unfortunate and deeply shocking, the Chief Minister said hailing the functioning and conduct of the proceedings of the deceased leader.

Yediyurappa has cancelled his official programmes in the morning and will be flying off to Sri Kalparudeshwara High School helipad of Pillenahalli village in Sakharayapatna Hobli to Kadur taluk in Chikkamagalur district to pay homage to the Dharme Gowda by helicopter from HAL airport.

Very sad news. My condolence to the family of deceased. There is a lesson to everyone not to try to drag leg of others and take over him/her on the advice of selfish people (politicians).

When the world says, “Give up,” Hope whispers, “Try it one more time". We live once and die once . The period in between these two are called life. Its evaluated how we live. Many a times humans come to a conclusion to end the life. That juncture one should realize that its not a end of the road , just a bend or a curve. But in the end one needs more courage to live than to kill himself..
May almighty rest the soul of S L Dharme Gowda's in peace. OM SHANTI..

    RIP Dharme Gowda.
But my point is nobody should take this type of action. When he is a family man, he should live for them and not not this dirty Politics. He should have resigned and must lead a family life. I request other politicians don't do this type of action.

This is true that when people kill themselves, they think they’re ending the pain, but all they’re doing is passing it on to those they leave behind..
    Om Shanthi......
Let us pray almighty rest him in peace . Condolences to beloved ones .

Jd, Mlr, you are right but what to do when judges themselves are associated with political parties?

Purpose of life is not to become rich, powerful and influential. Each one should define their objectives and their path because it is one life. Those people who fall prey, hand over their life to manipulators and lose ground. Few are able to walk back, most lose

Sometimes conscience is overdriven by high emotions where the person loses presence of mind.

Conscience many a times works properly when the mind is cool.

We should not take decision when we are carried away by emotion. Wait till the mind cools itself and then take decision.

This is what I have understood, may be there might be other views.
