Mangaluru, Dec 21: Mangaluru Crime Branch has successfully arrested the perpetrators involved in the theft of bikes and gold chains that have been reported in the city recently. Four motorbikes, two mangalsutras that were stolen by the accused were recovered by the police.
In connection with the two chain snatching incidents, one which occurred on December 9 at Padupanambur in Mulky police station limits and the other that was reported in Suratkal police station limits on December 18, the city special branch arrested three men. The arrested accused have been identified as Habib Hasan alias Abbi (39) of Chambugudde, Mangaluru; Abdul Mannan alias Abdul Munaf (21) of Moodupadukodi, Bantwal and Mohammed Thousif alias Shailu, Munna (28) of Hiriyadka, Udupi.
On further probe, it was discovered that Habib Hasan and Abdul Mannan were involved in the chain-snatching incident that took place at Mulky. Whereas, Mohammed Thousif and Habib Hasan were involved in the same form of offence that was reported at Suratkal. The police have recovered the stolen mangalsutras from the trio. The estimated value for the same being Rs 2.25 lac. The motorcycle used by the accused Abdul Mannan was also recovered.
Adding to their list of offences, Habib Hasan and Mohammed Thousif had also stolen motorbikes from different locations and used these very bikes to commit offences. Over four stolen vehicles were recovered from their possession.
Among the accused, Habib is involved in a list of other offences like, chain snatching, cattle theft and has 20 cases registered against him in Barke, Moodbidri, Suratkal, Ullal, Konaje, Bajpe, Vittal, Bantwal Town and Karkala Rural police stations. Another accused Abdul Mannan has 10 cases registered against him in offences like murder, dacoity, rioting at Ullal, Barke, Kankanady, Urwa police stations. The third accused Thousif is booked in an attempt to murder case at Mangaluru North police station and in another offence of dacoity at Mangaluru East police station.
The police have seized two gold mangalsutras, four two-wheelers, and three mobile phones from the men. The bike used for committing the crime along with all the seized items are estimated to be worth Rs 5.19 lac.
The arrest was conducted under the directions of Mangaluru commissioner Vikash Kumar, in the guidance of DCPs Hariram Shankar and Vinay Gaonkar. The team was led by Mahesh Prasad, PI CCB, Pradeep TR, PSI CCB and staff of CCB.
