WhatsApp to soon roll out audio, video calls for PC users

New Delhi, Dec 18 (IANS): Instant messaging app WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a new feature where a user can make or receive audio and video calls right on the desktop screen.

According to WABetaInfo, a website that tracks WhatsApp, the audio and video calls are now rolling out to the WhatsApp Desktop app. Unfortunately, this seems to be a very limited launch for now, with the buttons also getting beta labels according to the tipster.

The options to make audio and video calls have started appearing for some beta users, besides the search button at the top of the chat window — both bearing the beta tag.

As per the report, a user would still need a phone to be connected to the desktop app. Although, any audio or video calls will be routed via one's computer.

WhatsApp is also working on a new feature that would let users mute their videos before posting those to their friends and family members or putting them up as status.

The company is now developing a mute video feature and it has appeared on a beta update. In the screenshot shared by the WhatsApp features tracker, one can see the option of muting the video along with the trimming option.

The social media giant is also planning on making desktop a standalone application, meaning one would no longer require a smartphone to pair with the app or browser.

WhatsApp has also started rolling out advanced wallpaper features to more users.

This feature lets users set a different wallpaper for each chat. You can choose to set one wallpaper for all chats on WhatsApp, or manually select a different one for each chat.
