Udupi, Dec 18: MLA K Raghupati Bhat, revealed that a meeting was held with officials at Bengaluru about drawing up of a plan to set up government medical college in the district. He noted that the district has only a private medical college as of now.
"At the meeting of the government assurances committee held at Vidhana Soudha on Thursday, discussions were held with the officials about the pending assurances. The proposal to set up a government medical college here came in for specific mention. The attention of the officials was drawn towards the need to meet this assurance," he added.
He noted that the government has already approved a plan to upgrade the district hospital with 250 bed capacity. He also stated that the officials were also reminded of the fact that a 20-acre site has already been identified within a radius of ten km from the hospital to start the government medical college. He further stated that proposal to start BSc nursing college in the building adjacent to the district hospital was held with the registrar of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences at the meeting.
Principal secretary of the department of medical education, T K Anil Kumar, joint secretary M Shilpa, registrar of RGUHS, Shivananda Kapasi, director of Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences, Dr Ramalingappa, and Bidar Institute of Medical Sciences director Dr Shivakumar, were present at the meeting of the government assurances committee.
