Byndoor, Dec 17: Traffic problem has been turning into a grave issue in Byndoor, which is a taluk headquarter now. People find it very hard to drive vehicles on car street here. Even though service roads have been built to ease the traffic, they have turned into parking lots for two-wheelers.
The traffic issues have worsened because of the inability of the local administration in shifting the flower shops from the roadside, even though there is alternative space for them. There is a well-organized marketplace for them. Still, the vegetables and fruit shops have been trading their goods on the footpath of the main road, causing problems for the movement of pedestrians. Violation of traffic rules by drivers and haphazard parking of two-wheelers, cars, auto-rickshaws and cars have aggravated the problem.
Although traffic problems have become a serious matter in Byndoor, traffic police station, which is the need of the hour to streamline traffic, has not yet been allotted. The town is badly in need of a traffic police station. Workshops on road safety and traffic rules should be conducted at least once a month to keep lt he vehicle drivers abreast of their responsibilities. The police department, local administration and district administration have to attend to these issues.
The car street here is the place where various places can be accessed. But because of crowded shops on both the sides of the road and undisciplined parking, movement of the public and other vehicles poses a serious problem. Some of the shops and petty shops in Byndoor town area have occupied both roadsides including the drains. Therefore, the parking system and vehicular traffic suffer due to lack of space and congestion and traffic block has become a routine affair.
Byndoor police station house officer Sangeetha says that because of a shortage of staff, the department has not been able to execute the plan to turn Byndoor into a clean and beautiful town. She said that parking on one side per day by shifting sides on alternative days are being thought of. She said if the tahsildar takes steps to clear the illegal encroachments, her department will fully back such a move.
