Mangaluru: Winter season fails to bring in chilly weather

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 17: December used to be the month when the people used to shiver due to chilly weather. People found it hard to get up early because of the chill, and even after getting up, avoided going out for the fear of the shivering cold. However, in recent years, the entire winter season passes without making the people feel its chilly presence. For example, already three winter months have passed but the people have not experienced the extreme cold associated with this season.

On two to three days of October this year, the people went through somewhat extreme cold conditions. In the city there was no chilly weather except that once the minimum temperature reached 19 degree Celsius. In December, the minimum temperature has not gone below 22 degrees. Perhaps because of the cyclone, rain and movement of clouds, the minimum temperature this time was 21.1 degree Celsius. However, experts predict chances of chilly weather from mid-December to mid-January.

Whenever the weather during winter is not cool enough, it affects paddy harvest as the fields retain moisture. Because of strong sunshine this time, the moisture is evaporating. Farmers say that even cashew, mango and jackfruit trees flowering gets delayed if the temperature remains high.

This time however, northeast monsoon was better than the previous year with 36 percent more rainfall. Sunil Gavaskar, scientist of Karnataka State National Disaster Monitoring Centre, expects clear skies, dew and lower temperature from now on.

Climate is changing all over the world due to several reasons and we have to get used to it. This year, I am missing my white snow at this time of the year in New York. Last year we were there and it it snowed in November. But we had got used to all weather including the harsh winter. We had to report to duty as me and my wife were working for different hospitals. But we made it and are enjoying our retired life and we thank God for all this.

I have been shouting at the top of my voice here in these columns that our city badly needs a massive drive to plant saplings. Not just at the government level, each one of us should chip in by planting at least two saplings. It is not enough to just plant and leave them. We have to ensure that it grows up by providing sufficient water. If each one of us considers this as our moral obligation, we can have greenery all around us as a result of which the temperature might come down. A lot of damage has been inflicted by all of us to our nature and if we continue to cut off trees with the speed with which we are doing, our children and grand children are bound to suffer. Let us not be selfish. Let us gift some trees. It will benefit all of us. Please make it a point to plant as many samples as we can. Let us take a leaf out of Milan Roche's selfless efforts. Let us all join hands and turn this place into a much greener area. It is not an herculean effort. All it needs is a willingness on our part. Let us show that we are all one.

    Jossy,

Unlike Mumbai you can never feel the christmas chill, it's hot throughout the year! Go to Talegaon area to feel real Xmas time!

First time Mangalore is repeatedly getting the record of the hottest place in India since last year; last week on one day the temperature crossed 36deg, highest in the country!
This is the result of rampant deforestation, concretization & increase in population!
The climate throughout the year is sultry & hot adding to the other woes!
It's no more a comfortable city to live in!
