Mangaluru, Dec 15: As the old building of Kudmul Ranga Rao women's hostel near PVS Circle at Kodialbail had become dilapidated, the same has been vacated. A four-storey building costing eight crore rupees will be built in its place.
The hostel, constructed long back for providing free food and hostel facilities for the girls from scheduled castes and tribes hailing from far-off places was in a bad shape. Therefore the hostel inmates had been shifted three years back to a rented building. Three years back, concrete pieces had begun to fall from the ceiling of the building, and experts had warned that the building was not safe for being used as a residence.
The district has 29 hostels out of which 10 are post-matric student hostels and 19 are pre-matric hostels. About 800 students can stay in them. But the number of applications received every year for hostel accommodation is quite high. The students are chosen and provided. Because of the high number of students in the city, hostels are short of space, the officials stated.
Papa Bhovi, deputy director of women and child development department, said that the old Kudmul Ranga Rao Memorial hostel for ladies has been demolished and a four-storey building will come up in its place. He said that the new building construction will be completed in 18 months and it will accommodate about 300 students.
