Mangaluru: Auto stands disappearing from city roads, junctions

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Dec 15: Auto rickshaws have always been at the beck and call of passengers. They have to stop when the passenger signals to them to pick them up and also stop at the destinations desired by the passengers. The auto drivers also get admonished by traffic police who are under the instructions of the people, higher ups and influential persons, for creating hurdles in the traffic.

Ideally auto rickshaw parks or stands are needed at junctions for the convenience of the people. People use them for various things like going home, reaching offices and schools, attending functions, shopping etc. The city is woefully short of auto stands in a proper way. About 20 bus stands are being developed here but there is no proposal to set up or develop auto rickshaw stands. At a few places, the auto drivers on their own have tastefully maintained the auto stands. A number of auto stands created several years back have vanished.

Before the road in front of Ramakrishna College at Bunts Hostel was concreted, about 50 auto rickshaws used to wait there. Now about ten auto rickshaws can be seen haphazardly parked in the neighbouring places. Owners of some shops and establishments call the police to get these auto rickshaws removed from in front of their shops. An auto driver explained their predicament of having to drive away their three-wheelers after the policemen hurl abuses at them.

In the year 2010-11, in a joint survey conducted by the police, revenue, RTO office, auto drivers and owners’ representatives, 510 spots were identified for auto stands. But the police department had said that there is provision for only 210 auto stands. The city had to wait for the new auto stand scheme to get the city corporation clearance in 2019-20. But the scheme is yet to be undertaken. At a meeting held in the office of the deputy commissioner last week, the representatives of auto drivers and owners had tried to attract the officer's attention to their problems arising out of absence of auto stands. Even the smart city project it is said, has not made provisions for creating auto rickshaw stands.

Arun Kumar, honorary advisor of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike auto rickshaw unit here, said that the deputy commissioner has been apprised about the problem and that he has promised to take action in 15 days.

Although auto stands disappearing from city roads junctions,Auto owners have their own say or Darbar. In the absence of auto stand, they make their own stands on public roads and dictate themselves disrupting traffic. They are the rulers over there, public don't have the say.If we raise any objection to them, they start hurling lots of bad, filthy languages.Their attitudes are so harsh and rude except few. They think that RTO is under them.
As far as halting of rickshaws, they stop anywhere the moment passenger raise their hand at the cost traffic and human lives. They don't bother, whether they are creating a nuisance to to others or not. They act according to their whims and fancy. As far as charges are concerned, they are charging too high than what is due to them.It is their ploy to loot passengers whenever they get an opportunity.
But I found that there are few auto drivers, who are really having a human touch, behave very gently, properly. They are not money oriented but they are service oriented. They are providing their services purely on humanitarian ground.Hats off to them. They don't allow our place's name to be spoiled due to their arrogant attitude. Some drivers are good for nothing, they are too rude and misbehave with passengers.
Of course, without any doubt, auto drivers need shelter to park their vehicles but should be maintained properly.Their demands should be met by the concerned authorities, department at the earliest possible.
But one thing I would intended to say for each and everything don"t target Modi, our prime minister. He cannot do everything for you, this is the duty of concerned department and authorities.

Why do we require so many auto stands? Why should they be given Goverment Land /place in busy areas where there is no place for parking private vehicles? Let the number of autos reduce or let them keep moving to pick up people wherever the passengers are waiting.
Without auto stands, the city was running peacefully. These autos, charging more than the fare in big metro cities like Mumbai, want Govt land for their vehicles. What a stupid way our city is running?

Biggest problem in mangalore is till now mangalore city has not succeeded to have a parking centre either for taxis,or three wheelers ,two wheelers so wie so.Now day by day vehicles are increasing ,road is become narrow ,more pedastrians ,simply say conjusted.MMC do nothing to improve situations. They should do more for transport and stands.Only limited number of vehicles should be allowed in everypart of mangalore,so that no traffic jam exists and more vehicles than persons cause a lot of co2.

Rita, Germany, I have no words to express on your mind-blowing comments. You have not missed anything from the comments you made and I fully agree with every single word of it. I have been to many countries on job since many years but every time I come the situation is same in fact worst. Me and my family were born and bought up in Mumbai. We were educated in good Catholic schools and colleges . I worked in Dubai, Iraq and finally migrated to New York with my family. My children are well settled and we are retired after working for reputed hospitals and well settled. But even though we visit India and see the same. Electricity, water problem and you name it.

There are too many autos for such a small city and the fare is much on the higher side for a gas powered rickshaw, the drivers are very selective & will refuse going out of the city right from 6:30 demanding double fares! Same while coming from say Kulshekar church towards city they charge double or even more! They have got their own local gangs who will not allow another one to take you! Also in case of a verbal conversation 10 other drivers will collect and start attacking you! Disgusting fellas!

While sanctioning place for auto stand see that hey will not over charge. They collect double charges from the customers and some are very rude. They charge very high fare from outsiders. There should be fixed charge.

Are you talking about Mangalore or Bangalore? Mangalore auto drivers are largely decent human beings. There may be a few exceptions here and there.

The auto drivers are so smart and start their own stand were ever it is lucrative. They know where it is lucrative near hospital gates, places of worship, schools/colleges, community halls and etc. There should be a limit for autos at a particular stand, sometimes there are so many autos at a stand and overflow obstructing traffic. Why do we need two auto stands outside Fr. Mullers hospital Kankanady. The bus stop outside Fr. Mullers hospital has disappeared ( opposite the hospital).
