Udupi, Dec 14: A team from the Centre arrived in the district to survey the losses caused due to heavy rain and floods recently this year. As part of the survey, the team visited various affected areas, houses and inspected the crop loss.
The team visited Shivalli pass, the Baje dam, that supplies water to Udupi, to inspect the damage to Baje dam pumping station which submerged in the water due to floods hindering the supply of water. The team also inspected the height and quantity of water flow towards the dam.
The team also visited Manai, Bommarabettu gram panchayat limits, scrutinised the three houses that were destroyed, collected information from locals regarding the flood situation which took place and regarding the temporary compensation received from the district administration. After obtaining details of damages to local agricultural land at Kukkuje village, Karkala, the surveyors went to the vented dam and examined damages near the bridge at Nadoor village, Brahmavar-Jannadi road and the cyclone shelter at Thekkatte, Kundapur taluk.
The team discussed the information they collected earlier, regarding the damage caused by the floods, in a meeting held at the deputy commissioner’s auditorium and appreciated the timely assistance provided by the authorities to prevent the loss of life. The team hailed the courage of the locals at midnight hours when the floods wreaked havoc.
"The rain this time around was 1022 mm, while normal rainfall is 405 mm, 152% more rainfall was received this year. Generally, the rainfall between October 10 and October 15 is 40 mm. However, this year it was 263 mm, an excess of 553%. Over 77 villages were destroyed, 2,874 people from 827 families were rescued. 31 rescue centres were opened and 1,201 people were placed in shelters. Around 3,694 houses were damaged and the total loss is estimated to be around Rs 32,370.39 lac," said deputy commissioner G Jagadeesha.
MLA Raghupathi Bhat, Lalaji R Mendon, central team’s Sadananda Babu regional chief engineer, road transport and national highways, Government of India, Deep Shekar Singhwal, Dr C N Prabhu senior scientist, KSNDMC revenue department, district panchayat CEO Dr Navin Bhat, SP Vishnuvardhan, additional DC Sadashiva Prabhu, Kundapur sub-divisional officer Raju and other district-level officials were present.
