Mangaluru, Dec 13: The administrator of Father Muller Medical College Fr Ajith Menezes inaugurated the badminton tournament (doubles) for Christian community players of Mangaluru and Udupi diocese organised by Christian Sports Association, Mangaluru on December 13 at U S Mallya Indoor Stadium, Lalbagh.
Speaking on the occasion, Fr Ajith Menezes said, "This is a good thought process of the Christian Sports Association to conduct this tournament for the Christian community. Personality can be developed through sports and through working on our emotions. To maintain a healthy life there is a need to work out so that our body feels relaxed."
Gold medallist Asian master athletics Mary Hilda Fernandes and deputy director department of youth empowerment Pradeep D'Souza, president Christian Sports Association Ivan Patrao, president of Mangala Badminton Club Ashok Hegde were also present.
Total 141 teams are taking part in the badminton tournament. Treasurer of the association Melvyn Peris compered the event, Averyl Rodrigues welcomed the gathering and advisor of the tournament John Pais proposed the vote of thanks.
Events will be held for boys and men for the age group of below 15, above 15, above 25, above 35, above 45, above 55 and above 60. The events will be also held for girls and women in the age group below 15, above 15, above 25 and above 35.
Players were requested to follow coronavirus protocols issued by the government such as wearing a mask, body temperature check. Player details were recorded before they entered the match venue. Social distancing is to be followed and players were also required to bring their own water bottle and refrain from shaking hands with other players and referees.
The valedictory ceremony will be held on the evening of December 13 at 7:30 pm. Former Mr World Raymond D'Souza, international weightlifter Prajval Lobo, Arthur D'Souza, international athlete Clifford Joshua and vice president Christian Sports Association Ivan Pinto will be the guest of honour for the valedictory function.
