Udupi, Dec 9: During the clean-up operations undertaken on Hoode seashore within Tonse Kemmannu gram panchayat limits, over 5,000 empty bottles were found in the gaps between the boulders.
Nirmala Tonse organization, Hoode in association with other organizations, had undertaken the cleanliness campaign. Within a distance of one kilometre, a huge quantity of empty bottles was found stuck into the builders heaped to stop sea erosion.
The said organization has undertaken the cleanliness operation along with Kemmannu SKPA, Giants Welfare Foundation, Kemmannu College Old Students’ Association, Lions and Leo Club Kallianpur and others.
Some people arrive at the beach in the night. They seem to get drunk and throw away bottles here. A huge heap of waste that includes glass bottles, plastic cups, plastic bottles etc have accumulated at the beach. The number of bottles goes on increasing with each week and a huge heap of waste has formed here. Because of some who enjoy drinking, the others including tourists face problems. It also adversely harms tourist potential, the locals say.
It is said that the request of the locals not to drink here is not heeded by the visitors. When drunk, such people also create problems for others. Therefore, the environment gives rise to fear among the ladies, the locals said.
Member of Nirmala Tonse organization Richard Crasto says that the beach should be clean and the environment should be tranquil. He wants the police beat system to be further increased and stringent action to be taken against those who throw waste including bottles at the beach.
