Mangaluru, Dec 7: Tourist vehicle owners and drivers blocked a service bus that was carrying people of a marriage party on Monday, December 7.

This incident occurred at Thokottu junction.

The wedding party was travelling from Amblamogaru, Madaka towards Mukka on a bus that had received a route permit for Suratkal to State Bank. Taxi Men's and Maxicab association president Dinesh Kumpala along with Thokottu tourist drivers and owners blocked the bus at the Thokottu junction and informed the police department and RTO.

The tourist vehicle owners and drivers said that service buses are not supposed to carry passengers that are attending a specific marriage function.

Ullal police and traffic police personnel who rushed to the spot were about to penalize the bus, but the taxi drivers and owners urged them to register a case against permit violation. A case was registered likewise.

Kumpala said that the taxi drivers and owners have been deeply impacted due to the pandemic. "The buses are not running on set routes and this is costing us our livelihood. We had to act as the RTO is mum on the issue. We are paying tax even though we are not earning during these unprecedented times," he said.

“Our source of income comes from these wedding trips. We have informed about it to the people in the district. People are hesitating to travel in yellow coloured vehicles. They should give up such thoughts and show an inclination towards taxi drivers,” he said.

George D’Silva, Sharath Kumar, Krishna Poojary, Mustafa, Sebastian, Prajwal, Ranjith, Manjunath, Devesh Bangera and others were present.

“We have allowed wedding party members to continue their travel in the bus on humanitarian grounds even though the bus driver asked us to transport them in our vehicles,” said office bearers of the taximen association.

This taxi people are ruthless. Mangaloreans have not forgot what they did in Mangalore airport. Pandemic has affected all, but not selectively taximen alone. If their rule is allowed, this taxi people will stand with gun at centre of city and force people to travel at gun point. Let us remind them, we are living in a free market. If taxi is not profitable, go and start a barber shop....!

Some times, service buses are given on hire to the public for purpose such as sightseeing tours, marriages, school / college study tours / excursions etc. on the basis of rate per km. This type of operations is called casual contract services. There are many instances where some particular buses of some routes do not operate on some days, since the service bus is booked for function, which may be more profitable. In Bangalore, one can book a KSRTC bus for this purpose. It may be illegal, but it was going on from many years.

It looks, same thing may have happened in this case.

If the service bus does not divert from it's normal route and the convener has paid for the trip of all the passengers, I don't see any problem.

No one will provide the free food at current situation. Tourist cab owners are in right side. Due to COVID 19 and social distance situation, their daily earning of income reduced .

This is extremely unfair. The licences of tourist bus owners involved should be revoked by the authorities.

If someone had purchased tickets for all those in the bus, it is nobody’s concern whether they were all going to a wedding or some other function. It is highly possible that the father of the bride or groom couldn’t afford to hire a tourist bus and hence resorted to take the party by a service bus.

This action is highly condemnable and hope that you RTO takes stringent action against this goonda bus operators.

Its not their fault too. Tourist vehicle operators are paying higher tax and insurance compared with service buses. If they don't get business even after spending huge money, what they will do?
