Fish business stalled in Mangaluru over boat tragedy

Mangaluru, Dec 2: Fishing business was closed completely in the city on Wednesday December 2 owing to the tragedy that occurred in the deep sea in which six fishermen lost their lives.

Fishermen have expressed their rage against the Coast Guard. They are accusing that Coast Guard have just acted as if they were rescuing people during the drowning of the boat but in reality, they have not conducted any operation.

Hundreds of people gathered near the old port of the city. More police security was deployed with several KSRP vans monitoring the situation at spot.

It may be recalled, a fishing boat sank in the Arabian Sea on November 30 night. Bodies of four fishermen have been found. Still mortal remains of two more fishermen have to be fished out from deep sea. Search operation is in progress.

    It is a sorry state of affair. I feel sorry for all fishermen community. Some of them lost their loved ones in this boat tragedy.May their souls RIP and condolences to the bereaved families and loved ones. One of my friend in US lost one of his relative. It is a terrible tragedy. I hope everything will come to normalcy and fishing business will start again. After all it is their livelyhood and we all depend on them with their fresh catch.

    Owners of fishing boats, who earn a lot, should be compelled to buy group medical & life insurance as it's a risky profession!

    BTW, it appears that the boat was highly overloaded which led to the accident for which the owner should be held accountable & taken to task!

    High time for the authorities should frame strict guidelines regarding safety to the boat owners!

    Rudolf it's better not to speak anything with half knowledge.
    Owner of the the boat has got nothing to do with overloading ... He / she just owns the boat . The workers working in boat sometimes loads other boat fishes / nets to this which is later distributed to them after reaching dakya . The owner keeps the profit and looks after the money etc... It's not easy to explain. There is a lot of procedure. Please don't write whatever you think how this buissnes works. Its not easy. every work has some procedure which is way far difficult than you think it is. Unless you experience them.

    What happened terribly unfortunate but blaming owners here is not correct.
    Owners will have no idea how much fish was caught as they are not on deck nor in communication with the men on the boat.

    Keep in mind owners might also have to shut down their business owing to such huge losses when a boat is sunk and also affects their lively hood. Of course the pain and suffering at the moment is more with the families who have lost their loved ones - there is no debate on that.

    May their soul rest in peace and their families be strong in these times
