Mangaluru, Nov 22: In an incident that has come to light with some delay, a man befriended a woman on Facebook and conned her of Rs 14.91 lac on the pretext of sending her a gift.
On August 5 this year, a woman, resident of Pandeshwar in the city, got a friend request on Facebook from a person called Rionardo Neil. The woman accepted the friend request. The man then got her phone number and started calling her frequently through internet. He later told the woman that he would send her a gift. The woman initially declined the man's offer.
However, on August 25, a woman called the complainant and told her that she was callling from a courier office. She told the victim that a gift parcel had arrived in her name and she needs to pay Rs 32,800 to get the same. Later another woman called her and introduced herself as a customs officer from New Delhi and asked the victim to pay customs fee, account information, GST expenses etc.
Having obtained all the above information, the woman posing as customs officer withdrew Rs 14,91,840 from different accounts of the victim on various days.
A case in this connection is registered in cyber crime police station of the city.
