Bantwal, Nov 11: The court has sent to judicial custody two Irani gang members who were arrested in an old robbery case. The duo is accused of robbing gold ornaments from a man after posing as police personnel.
The accused are Maharashtra residents Zakir Hussain (26) and Kambar Rahim Mirza (32).
Earlier in the year on January 18, Mittabail Kodange resident Shivaprasad Sharma who was taking a stroll around Kaikamba when two unidentified men speaking in Hindi approached him on a bike.
The men stated that they were police personnel from the crime branch. To solidify their claim they also produced a fake crime branch identity card. The accused said that they wanted to investigate Shivaprasad Sharma and asked him to hand over cash and gold being carried by him. They advised Sharma that it was not safe to carry valuables in a reckless manner and rather advised him to keep it inside a handkerchief. Following this, the duo fled on their bike with gold worth lacs of rupees along with cash that was in the handkerchief.
A police complaint in this connection was also registered in Bantwal town police station.
Similar incidents were also reported from Kundapur and Udupi town police station limits. Udupi town police station personnel arrested the two accused and questioned them after which the duo confessed to the robberies.
The accused that were lodged in the Hiriadka prison were brought to Bantwal town police station for questioning. They were produced in the court and sent to 14 days judicial custody.
Crime division SI Kalaimar P took the accused in custody and conducted investigations under the guidance and directions from senior police officials.
