Kundapur, Nov 11: In connection with the impounding of 247 quintals of areca nut which was found being transported with the support of fake documents in Vandse village in the taluk, the department of commercial taxes has collected Rs 53,10,500 by way of penalty and taxes.
The irregularity had come to light after the goods vehicle was intercepted at Vandse on Amparu-Kollur road on May 23 and the goods were checked. The goods as well as the lorry had been handed over to Kota police station. The probe into the issue was undertaken by assistant commissioner of commercial taxes, Mangaluru western zone (enforcement).
The areca nut stock was being transported by Puttur-based Union Cargo Movers. The areca nut bought in Karnataka was being taken to Kerala along with fake documents. Under the Goods and Services Tax Act 2017 section 129 (1) (B), an order was passed demanding payment of taxes and penalty.
Mangaluru west zone commercial taxes joint commissioner, Udayashankar, stated that this amount was remitted by the concerned recently.
