Udupi, Nov 6: Deputy commissioner (DC) of the district, G Jagadeesha, has expressed happiness at the fact that Covid cases in his district are coming down.
Speaking about the issue, he stated that in the past, out of every hundred people tested, 30 people used to test positive for coronavirus infection. "But the rate of infection has now come down. This has been possible because of total support extended by the health department, health workers and the general public.
“Now, as per the guidelines of the government, meetings and functions are being held now, unlike in the past. However, in a few marriage programmes, it is seen that guidelines are not followed and higher number of people come together. Therefore, we plan to appoint an officer exclusively to keep a watch on the persons who get permission from the tahsildar. The tahsildar has been asked to file criminal cases against guideline violators. If the officer appointed to watch is found to have failed to do his duty I have asked to take action against him. We also have sought action against people not following social distance. It is often found that shopkeepers do business without wearing masks. Therefore, the officials too have to wear marks and ask others to follow suit. If the shop owners fail to obey this, their shop licence will be temporarily cancelled. In public transport too, all the rules should be followed without exception. If the drivers and conductors are found not wearing masks, action will be taken against them too," the deputy commissioner warned.
He said that there are vacant hospital beds now. He also had a word of caution for the people to make sure that these beds remain vacant and do not get occupied because of their own mistakes.
