Mumbai, May 1 (IANS) The golden jubilee of Maharashtra was celebrated with enthusiasm and festive fervour all across the state Saturday.
The main official function was held at Shivaji Park in the morning when Governor K. Sankaranarayanan took salute at a police parade.
Earlier, the governor, Chief Minister Ashok Chavan and Deputy Chief Minister Chhagan Bhujbal offered floral tributes at the Martyrs’ Memorial at Hutatma Chowk in south Mumbai.
Sankaranarayanan also inaugurated a three-day mega exhibition showcasing rare photographs of Maharashtra’s journey to become the leading developed state in the five decades since its birth.
The digitally-enhanced and well-preserved images include moments from the struggle for India’s independence, Mahatma Gandhi’s visits to the state, the struggle for Samyukta Maharashtra Movement, the forts and fortresses of the state, and the rich cultural heritage of Maharashtra.
The Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee will felicitate a few veterans of the Samyukta Maharashtra Movement in Pune.
The Shiv Sena and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena organised separate functions to mark the occasion Friday evening.
Similar functions have been organised in other regions and districts all across the state.
