Mumbai, Oct 31: According to details shared by the officials of The Briahmambai Municipal Corporation (BMC), the corporation fined people who did not wear masks as per the guidelines for Covid-19. The amount collected so far is said to be Rs 3.4 crore.
The BMC officials stepped up their surveillance against people who did not wear the face masks as it is reported that the Covid-19 infections have raised after the recently concluded festivals. Not wearing of mask attracts a fine of Rs 200.
Most number of violators were found in Ward L, which includes areas like Sakinaka and Kurla. The number of violators was 10,929 for the period of April 8 and October 29. There were 8,890 violators in K west ward which covers areas of Juhu and Andheri West. This ward also has the dubious distinction of having the highest number of Covid-19 cases. The numbers as of October 29 stood at 1,491. Officials of BMC had a tough time advising people to wear masks in this ward as they did not even care about the threat of legal action. Finally, the BMC officials made 35 violators do community service of cleaning the roads.
7,225 people were fined in R Central ward which consists of Borivali West. This ward also has reported the highest cases of Covid-19 in the metro city at 1,537 cases reported so far. Social distancing and wearing masks need to be followed by the public to bring down Covid-19 infections as the festival season is going on in the city say the officials of BMC.
