Kaup, Oct 28: BJP’s Anil Kumar was elected president of Kaup municipal council. Congress party’s Malini was elected vice president. Tahsildar Mohammed Isaq conducted the elections in the municipal council on Wednesday.
Kaup municipal council has 23 members. While the Congress supported members are 12, BJP has 11 members. Anil Kumar had submitted the nomination for the president's post that was reserved for backward class A category. Shabu Saheb and Ashwini had submitted nominations from Congress party.
However, Ashwini withdrew her nomination at the last moment.
Anil Kumar and Shabu Saheb remained in the fray. Anil was elected president on receiving 13 votes. Meanwhile, Shabu received only 11 votes. As BJP did not have a candidate for the post of vice president reserved for the backward class woman, Congress party’s Malini was elected vice president unopposed.
The elections for the post of president and vice president for the second term was to be conducted in 2018. As the controversy concerning the reservation for posts of president and vice presidents in the municipal council limits reached the court, the elections were delayed thrice. As the elections were held recently, the power will be vested only for seven months from now.
Among 12 Congress members, the absence of Suresh Devadiga for elections was surprising. He was in contact with party members until Tuesday evening but remained inaccessible on Wednesday.
Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje urged the party members that they have to reach greater heights. As BJP government is both at the centre and the state, sufficient funds will be released for the development of Kaup municipal council, so that everyone in the society is benefited under the leadership of the president and vice president. "All should work to take Kaup on the path of development and make it a model council. Let the administration be utmost transparent," she said.
Kaup MLA Lalaji R Mendon and Suresh Shetty Gurme were present.
