Udupi, Oct 28: Residents of a multi-storey building here have strongly opposed the illegal sale of fish in front of their building in Santhekatte.
Several fisherwomen sell their fish in front of the said building giving rise to problems for people and vehicles coming to the building.
Back in 2015, a full-fledged fish market was built in Santhekatte near the highway at the cost Rs 25 lac. However, the sale of fish stopped there gradually due to the scarcity of water and the market also remained closed for the last several months.
Building resident Seema Quadros speaking to Daijiworld said, "The fisherwomen sell fish every evening at 8.30 pm. This causes the fish odour to spread everywhere. As several people come here to buy fish, vehicles coming into the building are facing problems."
"The number of fisherwomen has also increased since the last week and a temporary shed has also been put in place. A wall is also being built with red stones," she added.
The building has over 238 houses and more than 25 shops. The residents have also argued that the fish market hinders the business of shops in the building.
Another building resident Arthur stated that the wastewater from the fish is also being discarded in the building vicinity.
Building occupants have complained to the deputy commissioner, health department and corporation commissioner about the problems being faced by them. The residents have urged the district administration and people representatives to help them from the stench and inconvenience caused by the fish market.
