Mangaluru, Oct 27: A Cattle Theft and Illegal Transport Detection Squad has been functioning under the city police. On October 25, the squad got information that cattle were being transported illegally towards the city from the direction of Bantwal.
Based on reliable information, Kankanady town station house officer along with other staff conducted joint operation near the Padil check post. When the vehicle approached the point, the police signalled it to stop, but the vehicle sped away without stopping. The pickup vehicle was found abandoned near Ujjodi, Pumpwell. On verification, six cows, a bull and five calves were found to have been illegally stuffed into the vehicle in a violent way. A case was registered in Kankanady town police station relating to this incident.
The police have been working to identify the accused who fled during the operation. The police said that the accused will be arrested soon. As per the court order, the rescued cattle were handed over to the cow shelter at Pajeeru.
Police sub-inspector of the said squad and officials of Kankanady town station participated in the operation.
The Cattle Theft and Illegal Transport Detection Squad has been specially formed with officers and staff of the city crime branch. It has been functioning from October 5 this year. Check posts have been set up at 32 places to keep vigil on vehicles which arrive into and leave the city. Night rounds have been beefed up and police sub-inspector level officer is being entrusted with early morning special rounds. Police inspector grade officer has been appointed as routine supervisor of the sub-divisional level. After this squad is formed, seven illegal cattle transportation cases were detected under the Prevention of Cow Slaughter act. After the squad was formed, a total of 28 cattle have been rescued so far.
