Bengaluru, Oct 24: Number of accidents in the state has always shown an increase from one year to the next. But in 2019, the number of accidents here has actually come down. As Per the figure provided by the central transport department, the number of accidents in Karnataka in the year 2019 was less as compared to 2018. In Fact, there were 1,049 less accidents in 2019, as a result of which the state has slipped to fifth place as far as number of accidents is concerned.

The state and central governments have been undertaking many measures to reduce accidents but they are not able to regulate them fully. Heavy fines have been introduced for violation of rules meant to bring down accidents and follow traffic rules. But there has not been any decline in such accidents. But as far as Karnataka is concerned, stricter action has given rise to some positive results. In addition to less accidents, the number of people who died in these accidents also came down from 2018 and 2019. In 2018, 41,707 accidents had happened but the figure went down to 40,659 in 2019. The number of deaths during 2019 was less by 32 than the previous year.
Karnataka fifth: In number of accidents, Karnataka had been placed fourth in the country. Now its place has slid to fifth. Tamil Nadu is in the first place followed by Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala.
In 2018, 10,990 people died in accidents which accounts for 27 deaths for every 100 accidents. In 2019, the number of deaths declined to 10,958. Number of injured also went down from 51,562 in 2018 to 50,447 next year. Accidents happen more on other roads, not on national and state highways. Deaths on national highways were 13,363 while deaths on state highways were 10,446. In other roads, 16,849 deaths have occurred,
Most of the accidents involved motorbikes. 15,549 two-wheeler riders, 6,654 pedestrians, 7,879 cars and 208 cycle riders were involved with accidents. Lorries, buses, and non-motor vehicles also met with accidents. Most of the accident happened when visibility was better, not when the client was cloudy. 3,181 accidents happened during the rainy season, 1,654 in fog-covered areas and 70 during hailstorms.
In cities with over ten lac population, Bengaluru is placed third behind Chennai and Delhi in number of accidents. Bengaluru accounted for 4,684 accidents in 2019 in which 768 people died, and 4,250 were injured.
