Mangaluru: Mayor announces creation of separate cell for waste management

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Oct 21: City mayor Diwakar Pandeshwar announced that a separate cell comprising corporators from the ruling party as well as the opposition, along with officials, would be formed to effectively implement the segregation of wet and dry waste.

He was addressing a meeting of city corporators and officials held at the Mangala Auditorium of the city corporation on Tuesday October 20. He expressed the view that coordination between the corporators and officials is needed for the efficient implementation of the solid waste management regulations. He hoped to address this issue by the creation of a separate cell which will look into solid waste management and segregation of waste.

Speaking on the occasion, city corporation commissioner Akshy Shridhar, expressed the view that solid waste management can be handled in an effective manner if the citizens join hands with the corporation by segregating waste. Environmental engineer of the corporation Madhu Manohar, said that the state high court, during the hearing of petition filed by Karnataka Legal Service Authority, had taken serious view of the solid waste management practices of this corporation and ordered to effectively implement the act. He said that waste producers and corporation have their own responsibilities to abide by the law.

He said that the corporation has set for itself an ambitious target of 100 percent for waste collection and that dumping yard should receive only the segregated waste. He said that bulk waste producers should install waste management units themselves. Every resident has to segregate their waste, and only wet waste will be collected from houses on all days except Fridays. On Fridays, only dry waste will be collected, he stated.

Praveenchandra Alva, speaking on behalf of the opposition corporators, asked QR code system to be implemented in all the wards and suggested that Swachhata inspectors have to conduct door to door visits to create awareness about the sorting of waste.

Waste segregation is the responsibility of the garbage collector! There is something wrong in our Officials and system! Why do I have to pay exorbitant garbage collection charges and also segregate the waste??

Wet, dry & reject waste should be segregated by placing three different bins and all the three should be collected every day and not as suggested by the law makers. Is it possible to collect all the dry waste inside an apartment for one whole week? Empty food packets, empty plastic food containers etc cant be stored for one week as it will emit bad odour and attract insects. Request the concerned authorities to taken decisions considering all the pros & cons. By the way, though it's considered as dry waste, in reality everything is not dry.

Hasi KAsa -Vona Kasa.. Mangalore has a dismal waste management system.
Yes as citizens we would like to join hands with the authorities to have an effective waste management system.
Maybe in select areas ..underground bins can be installed and the bins should be able to directly connect it and dump to the vehicle with minimal humans touching the waste ..such systems are there ..
I am sure mangalore municipality is capable to thinking out of the box and coming out with a working solution ..instead of asking the home owners to have their own waste management systems.
If that is the case why are we paying our taxes to the MCC? ..is it just to pay your salaries only?

Most of the people who take decisions on waste management might have never disposed waste in person at home. People's opinion should matter.I personally think that the old method of big size bins where we can dispose waste would be better with a little modification- 2 bins instead of one, one each for dry and wet waste where we can empty our waste at our convenience.Buckets can be directly emptied into the bins and there can be a person appointed by MCC to supervise in the initial stages that people do it correctly.Plastic can be collected separately at collection centers and recycled to produce petroleum products saving on imports.

Dear officers, it's not enough if you bring out new rule on paper and in front of media cameras. You need to equip the waste collection organization too. Current contract holder, Anthony Waste Management, has small trucks on which they load small and big bundled garbage and unload it into a bigger vehicle. They don't have leak proof bucket arrangement to empty our wet waste. Under current transportation arrangement, if we empty our wet waste bin into their vehicle, it drags on the entire street/s dripping the wet waste liquid.

There is an adage 'build a hut and then buy a cow'. You guys are making new laws sitting in your A/c offices but the transporter is continuing on his old methods. In the end, nothing changes.
