Mangaluru: Failure to pay fees - School removes students from WhatsApp group

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Oct 19: A private CBSE school in the city here removed students from its WhatsApp group following the non-payment of the fees, the parents alleged.

The teachers used to share notes, tips and study material on the WhatsApp knowledge group. However, several students were abruptly removed on October 15 which has stirred the parents who have written to the central and state governments seeking action, a report by TOI stated.

“On October 15, it was heart breaking for me and other parents to see our children’s names being removed from the online class group. The names were excluded because we could not pay the fees. My elder child was traumatised and asked if he should work rather than study in an institution where the money is the first priority,” a parent claimed.

Meanwhile, another parent stated that as per the government's order, the schools are not allowed to force parents to pay the fees and sought action against the school management.

The parents have called the school unfair and unprofessional. “When we enrolled our children in the newly built school, the management had assured us that charges will not be increased for five years. But it announced a hike the next academic year itself. We sought a reduction, but our pleas were not answered,” said the father of a student.

While on the other hand, the school principal maintained that the students were removed as the parents had failed to settle the charges of the previous year. "It is difficult to run the school if parents do not pay fees,” the school principal was quoted in a report by TOI.

Malleswamy, the deputy director of public instruction, Dakshina Kannada, said parents must file a formal complaint. “Without a complaint in writing, we cannot take action. The government order is very clear that educational institutions cannot force parents to pay fees,” he asserted.

    Dear parents
It's true that as per the government's order, the schools are not allowed to force parents to pay the fees and sought action against the school management..... but please ask the same government which has ordered to give instructions DDPI Office the same and issue notification to all aided schools,
Unless written and aprovd by the government and notification is received by consert department, no value for any order

Plz parents also has to understand the cituation of budjeted school.plz government has to give clear statement about this academic year.
First of all online classes will be such a waste.
    Waste of time
    Waste of intenet
Wts the use if students just login and keep their mobile.
There is no value for teachers effort.
    Government plz help poor teachers....

It is quite interesting to read the comments on this piece of news. All of us aware of the problems faced by the private schools which solely depend on the fees paid by the students. Often these schools also have fund raising activities since fees alone is not enough to maintain the school. For sure, every parent is aware of the quality, amenities and methodology of teaching-learning process when they take admission for their child in a particular school. It is to be noted that just about 2-3 percent private/unaided schools have surplus funds which may be enough for a few months of salary, etc. Many schools just about break even or in the red every academic/financial year. Yes, we have money for everything else except for education. Often parents go to a school and the first question is, what is the discount/concession on the fees? I had an experience in Mumbai where a parent wanted concession in fees even though he could afford it. So in turn, I went to his shop to buy a few things and asked him for a concession and he denied. So, it is always the school/college which has to bear the brunt of everything and also fight to educate children. How many parents are ready to send their children to Govt./aided schools where the fees are NIL or minimum??
My only request to all the parents is, schools/colleges have spent a lot more during this unprecedented times to equip the teachers/lecturers with technology, etc. It would be cheaper to have physical classes than live online classes where necessary hardware costs much. So, if the fess are not paid, then teachers will not be paid. If the teachers are not paid, then don't expect them to teach on a hungry stomach. Many teachers have resorted to other means of livelihood after they take their daily online classes. Many schools have reduced the fees, have given more installments, etc. At the same time, many parents have paid the fees too.
Hope all will be well soon.

Great views by everbody there was no blame game I agree the plight of the teachers and children. The govt should interfere and solve the problems everybody needs finance to run the show if pockets are empty how will they run. In this case the education minister should set a guide lines for all the schools without any discrimination through mutual consent.

If school syllabus is same why depend on CBSE private school and pay hefty fees if you can't afford. As long as your children are smart or don't want to compete with status it is fine and children can cope well in the general academic normal school.

Mr. Malleswamy your statement shows you are hand in glove with the school. Why do you need a formal complaint when you know the school has flouted a direct govt order ??

Government position is very clear that no school can force parents to pay the fees, nor can the government force the school pay salary to the teachers because paying salary is government's responsibility. Politicians are to stripped of all benefits and pension. Lot of money wold be saved.

The best thing to do is to shift the children from CBSE/ICSE/English medium schools to Government Aided Kannada Medium Schools, if you cannot afford to pay thier fees. In fact, many parents have done it this year. Majority of us have studied in such Kannada medium schools and have performed well in life...

If parents don't pay for the maintenence of the school and not bothered about staff and neat and clean ambience of the school ,I don't think that their child deserves to be in the school premises .Let the parents teach at home or wherever they can get free schooling

For last 6 month school managements are not in the position to pay salaries to teachers.. Don’t compare High profile schools to Budgeted schools(10000 to 20000)fee for full academic year. Most of the institutions are asking for half fees.
Government should come out with solutions , They only makes rules and Regulations for private Schools with prejudice. Without collecting fee how can a private school Run??
Even after 6 month parents are not willing to pay the fees for the services provided by Schools.. Schools are not responsible for that..
Education institutions has to pay Muncipal tax, electricity bill , minimum water Bill even though it is not used , internet bill, other maintenance, vehicle insurance , tax. though vehicles are not used.. Just to get clearance certificate from department....etc
    Will the government Exempt it!!

CBSE schools are private and unaided schools. Those schools are mainly depend on the students fees for paying off their teaching and non teaching, management staff. if the parents default in paying their wards fees, then the whole school faculty will suffer. Most of the teachers are getting just 50% of their original salary. They too have their families to support.Otherwise let the govt pay everyone's salary. If parents are unable to pay,let them send their kids to govt or aided school

Please dont think online teaching is easy for teachers, it is not. it is more difficult than face to face teaching. If the parents are not paying the fees.is the Government ready to pay teaching and non teaching staffs salary.
    Parents need to understand.

Dear Mr. Sultan, here not all schools are equipped with Online classes, teachers send pictures of the notes of the previous year and ask the students to write it and take a picture and share it back on Whatsapp. I agree if the students are from lower primary classes, but if they are from higher secondary then students are only writing notes but they will not understand the topic and no one to clear the doubts and these schools are enforcing to pay the fees. the principal quotes go file a case against the school if you want., else go to Education minister and complaint. do you think the ministers have no clue of all these challenges Education dept has to draw clear guide lines and enforce the school managements to follow the guide lines. Govt school teachers are visiting the students at their locality and teaching why the same is not done by Pvt school teachers and for your kind information certain schools in Mlore are not as good as schools in middle east (Dubai)

Teachers salaries are only a small part of the school expenses. A large part of what’s students pay is actually profit for the schools. They can easily reduce or cancel the fees for this academic year ..Many parents have lost jobs and have taken or are not being paid salaries!!!!

I won't blame the school, because school has to pay teachers fee internet fees electricity etc. Private schools have the latest fee and yes will be expensive. Can't blame parents nor can we blame the school. Tough situation for both parties but sadly children are in between

Agreed with ur comment, however there are few teachers who just send a video and expect a first standars child to understand all the concept of the lesson . Here the parents have to work as teacher to teach every thing to the child. Then the fees that the parents pay is actually a waste.

Madam, if you are not satisfied with the teachers why do you crib when the names are removed? Please remember even those teachers have to feed their children and pay their school fee. Do you expect them to do social service? Social service is their choice. You can not force them to do that.
