Moodbidri, Oct 16: Even before the National Kamadhenu Commission launched its campaign to make earthen lamps (diyas) out of cow dung, a seventh standard student here has made such lamps.
Shashank Borkar son of S N Borkar a textile merchant from here, and his wife Swathi who is a seventh standard student of Rotary Central School, has manufactured this diyas by mixing maida with cow dung. As he had dried his diyas under the sun thoroughly, even when dropped down, his diyas do not break or crack. Shashank also plans to make diyas by mixing dung with rice flour.
Parents of the boy say that they have been encouraging their son, taking into account his interest, and like the idea of making indigenous earthen lamps under 'vocal for local' concept holds bright future and ample employment opportunities. Shashank, a scout student, has shared a video explaining his ideas, which has become popular in social media.
