Udupi, Oct 16: Deputy commissioner (DC) G Jagadeesha instructed the concerned officials to inspect and estimate the loss suffered by individuals due to the incessant rains that battered the district recently and distribute the compensation as early as possible as per government guidelines.
Jagadeesha presided over the meeting of district disaster management authority which took place at the Dr V S Acharya auditorium of zilla panchayat office in the city on Thursday, October 15.
The DC said, "So far in the present monsoon 5,040 mm of rain has poured in the district, which is 16% more than usual. As per the estimate Rs 334.2 crore of loss has occurred in the district to roads, bridges, agriculture, crop loss and damage to houses."
He also said that in future all precautionary measure should be taken when there is alert of heavy rains in the district. He also informed that disaster management committees are formed at gram panchayat level and asked the members of such committees also to get involved in the rescue operation.
The DC instructed the municipal commissioner to inspect the encroachment of land near the storm water drains in the city limits of Udupi. He also instructed the municipal commissioner to see that such huge drains are free of any obstacles for the free flow of rain water. The DC also directed the officials to make a note of the houses in low-lying areas so that it will be easier to carry out rescue operations in future.
Jagadeesha also extended his greetings to officials, fishermen and volunteers, who saved more than 800 people during the recent floods and moved them to safer places.
If required more boats will be arranged for the fire service personnel, said the DC.
Zilla panchayat president Dinakar Babu, additional DC Sadashiva Prabhu, member secretary of legal services authority Kaveri, subdivisional officer of Kundapur Raju, deputy secretary of zilla panchayat Kiran Phednekar and district level implementation officials were present in the meeting.
