Moodbidri, Oct 16: A teacher from here, who had contracted coronavirus infection when discharging duties under the state government's 'Vidyagama' scheme, fell victim to the infection on Friday October 16.
Padmakshi N, a teacher of the Jawaharlal Nehru aided high school at Makki here used to teach the students under the 'Vidyagama' scheme by visiting various places. The teacher had fallen ill during such visits. On September 29, she had been confirmed with COVID infection. She was being treated at a private hospital at Mangaluru. She however, has succumbed to the infection.

Padmakshi's husband too had been infected after Padmakshi and he too was admitted. He has since recovered. Padmakshi's daughter, Aishwarya, had sought help for her family at this period of financial crisis, from the chief minister, ministers, MLA, MP etc. The chief minister later promised to meet the entire expenses of treatment by the government. But the teacher's life could not be saved.

Moodbidri, Oct 16: The health condition of teacher Padmakshi, who is being treated for coronavirus infection since the last 18 days, deteriorated on Thursday October 15 afternoon. The doctors are learnt to have recommended treatment supported by Ecmo therapy for her. Ecmo machines are not available in Mangaluru and therefore she is likely to be airlifted.
Padmakshi's husband Shashikanth, and daughter Aishwarya, discussed the issue with Dakshina Kannada district deputy commissioner Dr K V Rajendra, and district health officer Dr Bairy. Former MLA from here, Abhayachandra Jain is in contact with minister Kota Srinivas Poojary and other ministers.

Padmakshi's daughter had drawn the attention of people to her predicament after her mother and father, both teachers, who used to visit various places as part of the government's 'Vidyagama' scheme, contracted coronavirus infection. She explained that her mother was in the intensive care unit from day 1, all financial sources have dried up and her mother's condition was serious even though her father had recovered, and sought financial help. She had tagged chief minister B S Yediyurappa, Moodbidri MLA Umanath Kotian, MP Nalin Kumar Kateel, ministers S Suresh Kumar, Dr Sudhakar, and others.
The government, taking note of newspaper reports about the plight of the family, assured to meet the medical expenses of Padmakshi besides contacting Aishwarya and promising all help. In the meantime, Abhayachandra Jain said that on Friday, a mass prayer by local dignitaries has been arranged at Munisuvrutha Swami Basadi here for the health improvement of the ailing teacher.
