Mangaluru, Oct 14: The personnel of Konaje police station have arrested a person who allegedly raped and murdered a lady from Belleri in Balepuni village, Bantwal taluk. During the questioning, the arrested accused is said to have confessed having raped and killed the woman when the actual aim of his visit was to rob gold ornaments.
The arrested man, identified as Ashraf (28) happens to be a resident of Pathoor in Sakleshpur taluk. He stays in a rented home there. He had trespassed Kusuma's house at Belleri with the aim of robbing cash and ornaments. When he tried to yank away golden chain she was wearing, Kusuma reportedly resisted. The two fought at the time, during which time things inside her house were scattered around. Later, when he tried to rape her, the lady blocked his attempt. As he banged her head against the wall, she died on the spot, the accused reportedly said during his questioning.
Ashraf had visited Girish, who resides opposite Kusuma's residence, for working in his plantation. At that time, he had noticed that Kusuma stays alone at her house. He therefore had planned to rob her ornaments and cash, it is said.
Ashraf was working as an auto rickshaw driver in the past. He later sold off his three-wheeler and began to work as coolie. The police said that he would be produced in the court on Wednesday October 14.
