Kaup, Oct 13: On Sunday, October 11 evening a boat tragedy happened at the river Shambhavi estuary where Hejamady and Sasihithlu areas meet. In the tragedy, Sukhesh G Putran (24) from Hejamady Kody drowned. His body was found from the seashore at Hejamady Kody early morning on Monday.
Rajesh Putran, Panduranga Kotian, Nagesh Salian, Neeraj Karkera and Sukhesh Putran had left in a country boat belonging to Ekanath Karkera from Hejamady on Sunday morning. They had taken a net with them to catch fish. After fishing, they were returning home in the evening when a strong wind which blew at around 6.45 pm when the boat was near the Mulky estuary gave rise to huge waves which caused the boat to capsize.

Those in the boat fell into the sea. People in other boats nearby rescued them but Sukhesh Putran had gone missing. The others were saved. The local youth in large numbers went searching for Sukhesh. At around 2 am on Monday his body was found deposited on the seashore at Hejamady Kody.
When the fishermen fell into the water their mobile phones were drenched and stopped working. But Neeraj Karkera had kept his mobile phone in a plastic cover. He took out his phone and contacted other boat people while swimming in the sea. Other fishermen and coastal security police staff went there in different boats. The five fishermen who were facing peril due to huge waves and were struggling to stay afloat. They were finally saved and brought to the shore. The overturned boat along with its net were also safely brought to the shore.
