Mangaluru, Oct 11: Former chairman and CEO of Karnataka Bank Ltd Ananthakrishna passed away on Sunday October 11. He was 74.

Hailing from Bantwal, Ananthkrishna joined Karnataka Bank as an officer in 1971. He worked in different capacities at the operational level as well as management level, and was appointed chairman and CEO in the year 2000. He served in this capacity till 2009, after which he continued as non-executive chairman of the bank. He retired in 2016.

Ananthakrishna completed his school education from SVS High School, Bantwal. He pursued science at St Aloysius College, and went on to complete postgraduation in mathematics from Mysore University.

He began his career as a teacher at Deepika high school, Modankap, before serving as lecturer at Manipal Institute of Technology. He then joined Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL), Bangaluru as Junior Programmer before joining Karnataka Bank Ltd in 1971.

Under his able leadership, Karnataka Bank made quick progress, witnessing exponential growth and establising pan-India presence.

Ananthakrishna also served as honorary secretary of Indian Banks' Association and president of the
Bankers' Club, Mangaluru.

He was honoured with a number of awards, including 'PR Person of the Year – 2002' awarded by Public Relations
Society of India (PRSI), Mangaluru-Manipal chapter, KK Pai National Banking Award, 'Outstanding Manager - 2004' by Mangalore Management Association, New Year Award - 2008 constituted jointly by Academy of General Education, Rotary Club Udupi-Manipal and Syndicate Bank, and Rotary '4-Way Test' Award for exemplary ethics in business and vocation.

    A visionary with a charming demeanour, and futuristic thinking, he has steered the Bank successfully during the initial phase of digitisation, which was well-received by customers! His pleasing interaction with staff with a smiling face,irrespective of cadre is a rare gem. As members of Karnataka Bank family,his demise is an irreparable loss.

    Mr. Ananthkrishna's demise is great loss to banking Industry. He has his major efforts in making Karnataka bank a household name. He was my inmmediate neighbour in Bejai. He was very humble and lived a very simple life. A great human being. Our sincere condolences to his family. We pray to God for eternal peace of his noble soul.

    Sri Anantha Krishna was the public face of Karnataka Bank and a great visionary. During his tenure, Karnataka Bank had become a household name in the Banking Industry in India. His efforts in taking a small bank to national level, is definitely, not a small thing. Om Shanthi.

    I had a very rich and long experience , working under him, in the computer section and accounts dept. Especially, during the implementation of the partial banking and later on the Finacle - core banking system. I have very fond memories of him. My heart felt condolences , to his family members, on the sad and sudden demise of our beloved former CEO and Chairman of Karnataka Bank. I pray to God, May his soul rest in peace.
