Udupi: Man absolved of charges of keeping wild animals in confinement

Daijiworld Media Network - Udupi (SP)

Udupi, Oct 9: Forest officials, based on reliable information that a person identified as Sudhindra Aithal was running an unauthorised zoo at Kerekatte House in Saligrama, Brahmavar taluk, had raided the residence of the accused, taken him into custody and rescued several wild animals. Aithal reportedly maintained some rare species of wild animals without any authorization in his zoo which was titled 'Mrigaloka', where the animals were allegedly kept in a violent way. He also was collecting ticket charges from the people who were interested to visit his zoo, it was said.

The forest officials had produced the accused before the judge of the JMFC court at Kundapur, after which he was remanded to judicial custody. Aithal was later released by the court on bail. The investigating officials had filed charge sheet against Sidhindra Aithal in the JMFC court at Kundapur. During the trail which went on for 12 long years during which many witnesses were examined, it is said that the witnesses deposed against the accused.

The JMFC court, which heard the arguments and counter arguments, came to the conclusion that the prosecution had failed to prove the charges levelled against the accused. The court has acquitted him from all the charges.

Kundapur-based lawyer, Shyamasundar Nairy, and Neil Bryan Pereira, had represented the accused and placed arguments on his behalf, asserting that their client was innocent.

It's an irony to know that a person who is trying to provide a natural habitat for the animals is ridiculed. What's wrong with the police to produce him before the court?instead of providing him incentives to nurture his interests he is ridiculed. Very sad .pls encourage him to continue in his work by giving him subsidy for the fodder to feed these homeless animals.

It speaks volumes about the justice system in the country. Does it take twelve years for him to get justice in such a straightforward case? Has the judge anything to say about the inept handling of this case by the forest officials? Is there any compensation for Mr Aithal who had to go through this for twelve long years?

Does this mean that Cows & Buffaloes are only sacred and need a "Goyou Daya Kendra" and not other animals? Appreciate the work being done by Mr. Aithal as an animal lover

.Did anytime the forest officials catch people smuggling deer meat, wild boar , bison, etc .etc. In the past 12 years, i have not heard a single case except smuggling skins of animals and snakes. Then why trouble this person

Merwin Rodrigues Mumbai I totally agree with you as I too have seen how this man takes care of the sick and injured animals with whatever little he has.
He sure is a animal lover he should be given an award for the job he is doing. I too am an animal lover and I know know difficult it is to care for injured animals. We humans are heartless as we don't even care for our own parents leave alone caring for animals. Caring for animals is a gift not all can do this noble job. Hats off to Mr. Aithal the animal lover 🙏 God bless him abandantly.

He takes care of all the animals which are abandoned/met with accident/ handicapped and so on. So many dogs, cattle, cats/birds/sick monkeys of different breeds...I Am surprised to see them all. It's very very very difficult to take care by an ordinary man. He is very patient....He himself doesn't have posh house but he has given shelter to those animals who are sick and broken. ......its difficult to live with all sick and handicapped animals. May god bless him... Instead of arresting him, government should help him and give some funds. He is adopting animals that are sick and hurt and not healthier ones... He has not sufficient funds so he cannot provide a good living atmosphere.... So the situation is pathetic of everyone....including him....

Some of the Injured animals he treated never wanted to go away and always came back. I guess forest officials dug a mountain by filing case! They can not nab politically connected tree thefts. I think a sadistic case on a poor farmer. A classic example of strict and stupid officers!

Are these forest officials animal lovers or are they acting on behalf of some persons who are jealous of Mr.Aithal.

It's total jealousy.... Poor fellow still continues... I appreciate his hard work... May god bless him in his every move... Charles sir, I agree with you, what you have mentioned in your comment... really... People come and leave sick animals at his doorstep without his knowledge many a times he says. He doesn't abandon. He literally cries if any sick animal dies at his house. It's more than an vet hospital or an orphanage for animals, rather calling it a zoo... 😢😢

Agree with you Cynthy , I cannot understand why he is targeted always, some people hunt wild animals & even peacocks and are free & an animal lover who rescue injured animals , gives proper treatment for them & looks after them is facing problems instead of being awarded .

this is such a farce, this man does not capture wild animals himself, locals and forest officials bring him sick and injured animals which he tends to like his own children. Once the animals are fine he releases them back into the wild else continues to look after them if the condition is bad and he feels that they wont survive. Ive been to this place many a times, he does not collect ticket but has a donation box , this money is used to buy medicines and food for the animals.
This man is a farmer by profession and grows paddy of which he makes rice and ganji for the animals.
The animals i saw there a few years back:
    1. Huge sea turtle rescued by fishermen after fishermen from other states cut off its front legs - despite Aithal being a vegetarian, he used to feed the turtle fish daily from his own hands as the turtle couldn't move
    2. Fox- a bad case of canine distemper, the fox was unrecognisable, it has zero fur and it's skin was all dry and matted
    3. Owls - These are chicks that had fallen from nests, he cared for them and released them
    4. Deer- injured in traps set by hunters, broken leg
    5. Monkeys- injured and abandoned baby monkeys

I know the condition of the place was not the best, but he was trying his level best to give these animals all the help he could, instead of throwing a case on him, maybe the government could help him with better facilities so he can tend to many more such animals.
