Mangaluru, Oct 1: The year 1918 was a milestone year for the coastal city of Mangaluru. In June that year, a lone woman had set out to make a difference in the lives of the women of this region. Decades before the concept of ‘girl child’ became the focus of attention in the modern world; her insightful mind had already seen the value of empowering the womenfolk for achieving social transformation. Now a century later, her vision can be seen in the many educational institutions that stand proudly bearing her name. The woman was Dr Annie Besant, Theosophist, freedom fighter and social reformer. What prompted her to start an educational institution for women was the abject poverty, backwardness and pathetic conditions which she witnessed among women of the time, fuelled by superstition, regressive social practices and lack of enlightened approach.
Besant Girls School, a completely philanthropic institute, founded by Dr Annie Besant, under the flagship of National Education Society has completed 100 years in the service of education for women. The School initially managed by the Theosophical Society of India had played host to the Father of our Nation, Mahatma Gandhi. The school was also fortunate to have as its honoured visitors the Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore and the Governor General of India, C Rajagopalachari.
Women’s National Educational Society (WNES) Mangaluru established in 1943, took over the school administration from the Theosophical Society in the same year. This ushered in a new era in the realm of education in Mangaluru. WNES, subsequently, took a bold and gigantic step, bringing into its ambit a higher secondary school and a pre-university institution. In December 1976, the late Manel Srinivas Nayak, a great philanthropist, visionary and the then president of WNES, founded Besant Evening College and in June 1977 Besant Women’s College. While his foresight and initiative played a pivotal role in establishing the two institutions, the active leadership provided by his successors, the late B Damodar Prabhu and the late Manel Krishna Nayak enabled the institutions to register unprecedented growth.
