Mangaluru: Fortune reversal - Old cars are in good demand now

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (SP)

Mangaluru, Sep 29:
After the outbreak of coronavirus infection, people have been rarely moving out. Most people who had planned to acquire new cars have postponed their plans. Therefore, there has been a spurt in the demand for old cars at prices less than five lac rupees. As a result, it is said that there is a shortage of old cars in the market.

Old car dealers say that after the lockdown, there has been an increase in people making enquiries about old cars. Cars commanding a price of less than two lac rupees are in high demand. Many customers want to buy cars for less than Rs 2.5 lac and as many are thinking on these lines, there is a shortage of old cars,  they confess. An agent from here said that mostly they got old cars from Bengaluru but of late people are not selling their cars. Therefore, he says, the supply of old cars to the coast has dried up.

One of the car dealers said no one expected the old cars to be in such a demand. He said that there has been a 50 per cent hike in demand for cars between three and five lac rupees. He reasoned that because of the need to maintain social distance, only one or two can travel in a car. Therefore, people prefer to own old cars, he stated.

Another dealer, says that people are wary of using public transport and that is the reason for the increase in the demand for cars. He said that old cars priced between eight and ten lac rupees are not available in the market. The dealers agree that only those who are finding it impossible to pay equated monthly instalments are now selling their cars.

It is also said that old motorbikes are in demand now.  There was an increase in the number of bikes getting registered last month. Therefore, it is said, motorbikes meant for scrap are now being repaired in garages for sale.

This is akin to drinking only half the glass of water when being offered a full one, and throwing the rest away. Although, let's not compare short term consumables such as food with long term ones like cars.

If scrapped, The car's usage potential is wasted. All the effort, energy and materials that went into it's manufacturing is suddenly ignored. Granted, that some cars might be beyond repair, but most "used/old" cars have much more life left in them then one imagines.

Making full use of a vehicle, and maintaining/repairing it properly so as to keep it in the manufacturers guidelines for emission control helps the environment better, if not for Sitaraman's economic theory of buying new cars only xD

Government should levy heavy taxes on the re-registration of used cars.
Only then we can control the pollution.
The new cars come with very recent environmental standards.

Cost of raw material and taxes are rising every year. For todays situation buying used car is a good option, bad for pollution. Hundreds of two wheels were on sale from bounce startup company. They had a good response. Govt is trying its very best to stop used cars by increasing taxes and scrap policy.

That's certainly up to the old man to decide! 😄 Well, many old men I know feel the same.

But for some who tend to think rationally and keep their emotions aside, they find their old car causing them more trouble than desired (modhe raster vasru galche, difficult to control, multiple repair bills because of poor design, increased fuel consumption, higher insurance (>4m length and 1500 cc engine). In these cases, there is more trouble and cost involved compared to owning a relatively newer car (not saying brand new).

In the end, it is up to the old or young man or woman to see how they can invest their money more wisely ( Keeping opportunity cost also in mind ), while looking at their present vehicle.

    Mark 2:21-22
    Luke 5:36-39
All bear the same message😄, although for a similar purpose.

P.s: The old car for my comparision is an old Tata Sumo

I must also add that it is possible for one to choose in being like old or new wine. One need not be stuck in the old or try to be new.
