Mangaluru: Youth Congress leaders attempt to hold rally without permit, detained

Daijiworld Media Network - Mangaluru (ANK)

Mangaluru, Sep 25: Chaos prevailed near Clock Tower at Hampankatta here on Friday September 25 evening after Youth Congress leaders and activists attempted to hold a protest rally condemning the Farm Bills passed by the Parliament.

Several Youth Congress leaders including Mithun Rai, Praveen Chandra Alva, A C Vinayraj were detained by the police.

The Youth Congress had planned to hold the rally from Clock Tower to DC's office. However, it is learnt that they did not have valid permission for the rally.

The police who intervened even before the rally could start rounded up the activists and took them away in vans.

The protestors chanted slogans against the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led central government and termed the Farm Bills as being 'anti-farmer' and pro-corporates.

Addressing the protest prior to the rally, Mithun Rai said, "The government has become a puppet at the hands of the investors in bringing this anti-farmer bill. Three farm bills were passed without any discussion. These bills will severely affect the farmers. We assure that we stand with the farmers. It is condemnable to snatch away the rights of farmers."

Earlier in the day, the district Congress held a protest along with other organisations against the Farm Bills passed by the Parliament.

Farmers across the country on Friday protested against the Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Bill, 2020, the Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement of Price Assurance and Farm Services Bill, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Bill, 2020, passed by Parliament during the curtailed monsoon session that ended on Wednesday September 23.

why are these congress guys against the farmers?

The bill only gives the farmers more choices.
Dont they want farmers to get more choice?

MSP will remain, infact its been increased.
    APMC Mandi will remain too.
Farmer now has a choice to sell his produce whereever he wants.
    Shouldnt he get that too?

If anything thinks that a Farmer is a fool and you are the only smart person around, then you are the greater fool.

Let me give you an example to explain the farms bill -
Here Tesla, electric car maker is becoming popular day by day & they have now built factories in China & Germany.
What Tesla did is that they started selling their cars directly to the customers without the need to go to the dealer. Electric cars do not require regular servicing like gas powered cars since they do not require regular changing engine, gear oil & filter, have less insurance premium & they can be charged at home overnight with regular charger or fast charges outside.
So opposition started from some quarters as usual (dealers). They influenced to enact laws at state level in some states so that the customers cannot buy directly. But customers would take some inconvenience & go to the state where it is manufactured or sold or buy directly online.
Also Tesla started building charging stations throughout US so that the cars can be charged if someone would like to drive from west coast to east coast.

It's possible. Just compare US with India.
    1. India has Arabian sea at the west coast & Bay of Bengal in the east coast. US has Pacific ocean & Atlantic ocean. In both the cases the sea & ocean are protecting the countries.
    2. Both India & US have multiple geographical regions. So it's a plus point for agricultural purposes. Different varieties of Apple from Kashmir, Mango & Pineapple from south, dates from Rajastan , rice from south & wheat from north etc., etc., So the import bill on agriculture can be brought down.
    3. One of the plus point for India is the geographical size. India is much smaller when compared to US. So logistics with railway is a plus point. Also railway is economically sustainable unlike the air travel. Only need is reduce the time of travel by electrifying which increases acceleration & doubling which reduces waiting time. In India there are railway lines in east coast & west coast. Railway line at the central region is the need to be converted into broad gauge from meter gauge.

The concept of eliminating middle men is well understood, but cannot compare Cars with agri produces which are perishable by nature.

I can tell from my experience of working in a agri belt of Kerala where lot of paddy is cultivated and where there are many rice mills.... Rice Mills engage middlemen to enter into deal with farmers for continuous supply of paddy to them. Even when the Kerala Govt offers a Minimum Support Price (MSP) of Rs.26.30 per kg which is the highest in country (Centre’s FCI offers only Rs.18.68), the middlemen gets their deal done at around Rs.18-20, because they give advance payments and also payments are done immediately on loading the paddy. The farmers who are always in shortage of money is forced to sell to these middlemen, just because payment from the Government takes 30-45 days. Just imagine replacing these middlemen by biggies like Reliance / Big Bazaar etc., who will exploit the situation much more than the local middlemen. Also these biggies stock at low prices, store under controlled temperature, create artificial scarcity, jack up the prices and then release the goods.

(Another associated risk with the private middlemen is that they launder the money (take physical cash from those who are involved Hawala / Black Money deals, give it to farmers and take payment from companies by cheque)

What is required for the farmers is not elimination of APMCs / Mandis but to reform them and make its functioning more effective and farmer-friendly by ensuring timely payments. Also provide Transportation / Cold-Dry Storage / Godown at low rental. MSP should be made legally binding depending upon crops of each State just like Kerala Govt offering MSP for Coconut, Paddy, and Rubber etc. This Bill in the name of eliminating middlemen is actually pawning the farmers to the market monopolies.

Tesla example is a direct B2C case. In this case, it is producer to middlemen; only thing the bill does is replacing Govt agencies by private middlemen.

What I read is that APMC is going to stay, but the farmers are going to get additional option of selling their produce directly to the customers (& may be big corporates) through app. I feel the dealings would be transparent through the banking system. Also the govt., has introduced Kisan Rail with temperature controlled wagons. Let's see how the logistics network going to expand throughout India.

Its a myth that gst is bad. India is not the first or only country to have gst. Infact it already too late. However now implemented with time gst policy will evolve. No party can implement the perfect gst policy in a diverse country like India. It needs to evolve over time. Coming to farmer bill.. except the real farmers all others are protesting or commenting. That answers all questions. Further the educated can look up for details and make their decision. Just don't be last and oppose for the sake of opposing. Farmers now have the right to decide the selling price of their produce, which they never had in the past.
