Mangaluru, Sep 23: Mangaluru City Corporation’s (MCC) recent proposal of renaming Ladyhill circle to Narayana Guru circle, drew criticism and led to oppositions from various groups.
Some students raised objections and started a campaign opposing the same. Later, Catholic Sabha submitted a memorandum to the deputy commissioner, MCC commissioner and the mayor highlighting the century old historical significance of the name and asking to retain the name ‘Ladyhill’.
In the same memorandum, the names being used in buses and bus stops were highlighted claiming the significance apart from many others.
However, after receiving various oppositions and resentment, the city corporation had kept the proposal pending for the time being.
Now the private bus owners have started their campaign in support of renaming Ladyhill circle to Narayana Guru circle.
Several private buses in Mangaluru have put up Narayana Guru name plates in the buses showing support to this move.
The city corporation council had proposed renaming the circle as part of its agenda for the general session of the council which was to be held on Tuesday September 22 which was dropped later.
