Udupi, Sep 23: Due to heavy rainfall, Koterayana Betta on the Western Ghats range caved in on Sunday. The hill has caved in for a distance of about three kilometres. Several acres of forest were destroyed in the incident. A huge water body has resulted as a consequence, from which heavy water mixed with slush is flowing towards Mannadi village.
The location is around five kilometres away from Madamakki in Hebri taluk. The people living at the foot of the Western Ghats are apprehensive as the hill has suffered a landslide for the first time, and water is gushing out at tremendous speed. They are fearful about the chances of further landslides in the region which might pose danger to them.
On Tuesday September 22, range forest officer of forest wildlife division at Agumbe, Sandesh, along with forest staff, visited the spot and inspected the damage. The team could not properly calculate the actual destruction of forest in this incident. No other government officials visited the site. Study about the possible dangers from this landslide in future is yet to be undertaken.
