Youth graduates from UK, starts fish business in Mangaluru

Mangaluru, Sep 22: A youngster hailing from Kunjathbail who has done his Masters in Construction Management in the United Kingdom (UK) started a fish business at Bikarnakatte.

Varun Shenava hailing from Kunjathbail has completed his Masters in Construction Management from Coventry University in the United Kingdom. Varun, after returning to India, has ventured into fish business at Bikarnakatte named the firm 'Kadal Fish Mart'. The shop started functioning on August 31.

Speaking to Daijiworld, Varun said, "I have completed my education in construction management from Coventry University. During my third semester, there was a project that had to be completed. At the same time, my father's health condition turned critical. I had a desire to come back to India and work here. I completed my education at Coventry University and after the result, I came back to India."

"I was looking for a job. On March 23, Prestige Constructions called me for an interview. However, the government imposed a lockdown during that time. For around four to five months, I was hunting for a job and due to the lockdown, I could not get one. So I thought of this idea of starting a fish business as a few of my friends were in the same business. I spoke to some of the fish suppliers. My father objected to my decision as I have graduated from a university in the United Kingdom. But my well-wishers and friends supported me to start this business," he said.

"In this business, I thought of introducing a new idea that is free home delivery and also cleaning and cutting. This will save the time and efforts of my customers. We need support from the people of Mangaluru in this venture and it is what we need the most," Varun added.

"My plan in future is to expand this business further along with starting import and export with the help of my contacts in the United Kingdom. For home delivery one can contact 9036661232 and 7022999617," said Varun.

The people like Mr.Varun is seen every part of our country. Getting graduation from one subject, and doing lively hood with other line, that shows totally mismatch with their study. Some people get succeed in it and some others will get lose and repent over their fate. This seems our basic structure of our education is in a wrong way. Parents, Teachers does not give a good guidence to the children to carry their children's life with the interesting subject in future. Our education system runs with a matter of prestige, but not with a matter of interest in the subject, this could make a lot of changes in the mind of our children cum youth. Many of our highly educated youths are still now working under the uneducated person who runs business; and half a thru knowledge holder by using their influence are now in a good position in our country....acchey din kab aayega? I really appreciate the courage of Mr.Varun who is doing the fish business rather than wasting his time to search jobs and getting depress from life. All the best to Mr.Varun, you have a better future in your life...God bless you dear.

    Hi Varun
I am from Bikernakatte and i currently live in Mumbai. As you must have witnessed in the West, no job is less reputable. You have done a great effort and rest assured you will succeed as long as you serve people with dedication, hardwork and sincerity. Perhaps it is time for our Govt to look at your youth. Once this pandemic subsides and the markets open up, you must give your studied trade a try and Mangalore is the place where construction industry would need qualified people.
    Good luck, God bless.

    Mr. Varun Shenava,
As a temporary job alternative, you have done good.
You/your parents would have spent anything around 40-45 lakhs of rupees for your studies in Coventry University for two years. So don't let it go waste. Anybody can sell fish, do some thing great once the pandemic is over.

Good example .. Great Courage to show when your relatives and others are around ..(We know what stereotypes these relatives vomit due to jealousy..especially your own brother in laws and brothers ..
Great business ventures like KFC, started as small enterprises and grew leaps and bounds ,,,what matters is your dedication,honesty,hardwork..ability to learn and adapt quickly ..Ability to overcome temporary setbacks .
Good luck to you young man

Really a good example. I have seen the youngsters who study little are not willing to join small jobs. Same indians work washing dishes, cooking food in small restaurants in foreign countries. One of my nephew did communication engineering in mumbai and than he we went to Australia for his masters. He was working in McDowell restaurant. Why indians want only good job, more jewelry, big house, big car etc.
Having big thing is not bad but if you are not getting big thing than enjoy with whatever you get.

Though fish catch is very scarce every one venture to this fish business. Its not known how they manage to get fish. The present fish dealers say when asked about its source, they say that its from Malpe. In each and every roadside there are fish sellers. Anyway wish you all the best for your business which you preferred though you are qualified in construction management.

SJM all trades are respected. Only pork is haram for some but delicacy for others in Bikarnakatte. You can make more money by selling pakodas since less headache and profit margin is more. You talk like Italian pizza lover. Get to your roots.

Yes Youngman, No one gone to schools, colleges, universities and so on for the sake of knowledge. Everyone's intention to to get a good job and earn and save money. If you are happy with what you are doing go ahead. But remember one thing if you are not settled with a good job for your studies after 2 years your importance to your degree of foreign university will go down by 60%. and at that time getting a job is very difficult.

Coventry University is a good university of UK. This Master of Science degree is a full time one year course in UK. One year masters degrees from UK, Australia are not recognized as equivalent to a masters degree in India now, though there is a proposal to recognize after full checking the course, which may take some years. Students with one-year postgraduate degree qualification cannot appear for the National Eligibility Test (NET) or UGC - NET in India.

I wish you all the best Varun in your business.

One thing I want to add, after my above comment here, is that, though some of the courses are not recognized as equivalent to our courses in India, the degrees and courses of UK are recognized in almost 180 countries. ACCA (London) passed people are not qualified to do the audit and attestation work in India, and a CA is the only option. To study in London is much costlier than Canada and Australia.

This Master of Science degree in construction management acquired by Varun, is accredited by both the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) and Chartered Institute of Building, hence has good scope overseas. Eventually, when the corona situation is over, it is advisable that Varun should
hand over this business to family members and try for a position overseas, if interested.

I think the title is a little bit misleading. The way I interpreted the title is Varun returned back because he was unable to a land a job in UK after his graduation. After reading the article, I found out he was unable to land a job in Mangalore with Prestige constructions. The title might lead people into thinking incorrectly that getting job in UK after masters graduation is not possible, that might very well be the case given the economic and political(Brexit) climate but this story is not one of them.

Apart from that, this is a good story of spirit and self employment. Although he was suggested not to get into fish business(low class) after being a UK graduate(high class), he was practical and pursued what seemed right to him, good luck to Varun in his new venture!
