Udupi: Landslide poses threat to Premier Enclave building in Manipal, residents asked to vacate

Udupi, Sep 21: Torrential rains which have been pounding the district for some time have given rise to floods. Now, one more such disaster is waiting to happen, a landslide is now posing danger to the commercial and residential building Premier Enclave located in Manipal.
 
Taking cognisance of the situation, CMC commissioner Anand Kallolikar, engineer Mohanraj, NHAI engineer visited and examined the spot. The landslide occurred on Monday morning and now has caused a deep cave in the spot.
 












 
 
The building has 8+2 floors which include 32 flats. Talking on the matter, Kallolikar said, "The district deputy commissioner has instructed to vacate the building as soon as possible."
 
Meanwhile, Mohanraj stated that the building is built on pile foundation and if a crack appears on the wall before 24 hours, it is could pose a serious risk.
 
To prevent issues, the 2 km road stretch from Indrali junction to Manipal, has been turned into one-way. Police also placed barricades along the road.
 
The locals also opined that the continuous rainfall that been wreaking havoc in the district could have very well caused the landslide.

    People at times comment without any knowledge or background idea of the situation.
    Home owners itself are saying that the building is safe but to the sturdy construction and the builder is very well and renowned.
    The government officials are to be blamed for sure but as usual the ruling party would blame the later and so on.
    Firstly concreting roads is the biggest mistake as it creates a lot of trouble with the ground water level.
    The officials are only concerned with filling their pockets and making as much wealth as possible.
    Home owners of this building are lucky that the builder is genuine person who does an excellent job thus this building is still standing.

    Present Ruling Party MLA So interested in building roads that they don't even.think how many years it should last, they don't mind building a some road every year and miby commission through it, downstream.bother to think about existing buildings besides it....

    I am a resident of this building. This building was built 14 yrs back and there was no problem until the government decided to widen the roads. The issue is when the government built the road, they had no idea to make way for the rain water. We have given several complaints yet they were so irresponsible. I do not blame the engineer for building the apartments there as it is a wonderful location and had a very good greenary there. We used to sit in our balcony and enjoy the views everyday. But I just don't understand how pathetic the government is. Even after several complaints no resolutions. If they can change the direction of the water flow, that would be a good resolution.

    I agree with you Chandrika Pai. I feel building is safe due to sound engineering. How can NH authority widen the road without providing adequate storm water drain (Thodu) ? All the water is gushing into the building and sides of the building making a strong channel of waterflow since road widening started! Highway may be surviving on strength of this building due to strong foundation....otherwise road of this stretch wouldn't survive?. Isn't there any provision to take the responsible authority to task for their mindless, unscientific, poor quality of work and don't care attitude??? They ware warned and requested to take care of drain water of rainy season several times! I wish apt owners association takes legal action on erring authority!!

    I always had a premonition that such a thing would happen.In 2014 land caved in near Inox.When the highway was being constructed loads of debris was dumped there to widen the road.There are many such high-rises in Manipal.They look majestic and provide an incredible view, but are they really safe during natural disasters?

    This building was built 20+ years back on pile foundation of 24 Mtr deep quite unaware for those days... such an investment on foundation those days! Why no one blames unscientific mindless and uneducated Highway contractors warned to take care of water flow half a dozen times in past few months? Babu’s may not yield without it right? Who’s fathers what gone?

    Our school teacher in Manipal had told that those building will fall due to landslide or small earthquake soon. It looks a reality now. Those kumdalkad forests have been totally destroyed and selfish people have looted the place which belongs to nature.

    At least for future limit depth digging and also hill palaces.sufficient place should be provided in surrounding area. If district administration don't take proper care while sanctioning building sketches more such incidents occurs in future

    This is a serious situation and I feel sorry for the residents of Premier Enclave building in Manipal. They will have to vacate for their safety if need be. Since there is heavy rainfall since last couple of days and still raining nobody can take chances. God help them.

    Udupi temple town was controlled by br shetty party of bjp municipal corporation for more than 50 years. Congress only managed to get one term only. Br shetty to be blamed with his party for allowing forest area and most of the sites in udupi owned by matt and Brahmins and upper castes shetty poojaris. They sold it to builders to make fast money. Note that Konkani guys came later and took over manipal which was gorest area. Tiger circle it was before money made it tyre circle.

    The mighty engineers to be blamed to this mishap ! without calculating the risk factors how they given NOD to this kind of Multistory building where the several families life put in jeopardy ! who has to blame now ! contractor, engineer, govt officials or client!! People invested their life time earnings into their project to have a shelter but some morons are in a hurry to save the cost put the life of people in dangerous situation.

    When we were studying engineering in MIT Manipal, this area was the lush green forest land and was called as the lungs of Manipal. There was a huge protest by environmentalists when concrete construction work was initiated destroying the entire forest :(
    Manipal has lost its beauty, it has become just another concrete land.

    I agree. We don't give a damn when environmentalists raise their voice against destruction of forest. All our authorities want is MONEY. Same will happen with Yettinahole, Kuduremukh, Bangalore highway, Kodagu, so on. We discard the natural treasure of trees that hold soil in place. A 25 year old tree can't be fabricated to replace one that was chopped off.

    Had the sanity prevailed, the road should've been provided with a U-turn and hence the road barricaded could've been just less than 500m instead of 2km. Multiple protests, writing to DC yielded no result. Hope now they get some senses. A road exit in Laxmindranagar/VP Nagar is much needed, it even leads to wastage of precious fuel.

    Its not a joke ! big investment involved and the builder should consider all the aspects before investing including the buyers too. Nowadays people are creating artificial land filled with mud / soil which is vulnerable during this kind of torrential unexpected rain. Please take the time to study the area concern not in hurry to make the wealth which will be bogus like the above news.

    Builder looks the most cheapest land to build apartments to make money. It's a fully forest slide area which was filled with the mud to build the building. Poor owners are at stake.
