Mangaluru/Udupi, Sep 18: Dakshina Kannada on Friday September 17 witnessed another sharp spike in the coronavirus tally with 456 new cases and 11 deaths being reported, while Udupi's tally neared the 15,000-mark.
As per the Dakshina Kannada district health bulletin, a total of 19,322 positive cases have been reported till date, out of which 4,506 are currently active. A total of 1,33,787 samples have been tested so far, out of which 1,14,465 are negative.
As many as 14,344 patients have recovered and been discharged from hospital, including 340 on Friday. A total of 472 deaths have occured so far, including 11 on Friday.
Among the 456 new cases, 131 are contacts, 236 have influenza-like illness (ILI), 14 have been diagnosed with severe acute respiratory illness (SARI), and 75 cases are under investigation. As many as 192 out of the 456 patients are asymptomatic.
Out of the 456 cases, as many as 242 are from Mangaluru, 86 from Bantwal, 40 from Beltangady, 27 from Puttur, 26 from Sullia and 35 are from outside DK district.
All the 11 patients who died on Friday had comorbidities. Mangaluru reported six deaths, while Bantwal, Puttur and Sullia reported one each, and two were from outside DK district.
Udupi
Due to strike by government doctors in Udupi, the daily coronavirus bulletins had not been released to the media since September 14. On Friday, a cumulative health bulletin was issued with statistics of the last four days. Since September 14, Udupi district recorded 845 new cases, taking the total number of positive cases to 14,883, out of which 1,703 are active.
Out of the 92,474 samples collected so far, 77,382 are negative. As many as 209 reports are awaited. Of the total samples collected in the last four days, 5,018 are COVID suspects and 608 are COVID contacts.
A total of 7,692 people are in COVID hospitals/care centres, while a total of 7,184 people are in home isolation.
As many as 13,041 patients have recovered and been discharged so far, including 6,689 from hospital and 6,352 from home isolation.
A total of 139 deaths have occured so far, including nine in the last four days. All of them had comorbidities.
Out of the 845 cases reported in the last four days, 578 were in Udupi, 127 in Kundapur, 114 in Karkala and 26 from outside the district. Among them, 430 are contacts, 215 have ILI, 23 have been diagnosed with SARI, and 165 are under investigation. Nine patients have domestic travel history and three have travelled internationally. Out of the 845 cases, 466 are asymptomatic.
