Chitradurga, Sep 18: A few weeks ago, Karnataka police seized a 4-acre land which was being illegally used to cultivate ganja in Chitradurga's Ramapura.
As per the police sources, the land was being leased by a person identified as Rudresh, from three brothers in Chitradurga. Police are yet to track him down.
The officials seized over 9,872 kg of marijuana worth Rs 4.2 crore. "Seized marijuana worth Rs 4 crore. 3 men arrested, efforts underway to nab the main accused who had taken land on lease, " the police said.
The Ramapura police were tipped-off about the cannabis cultivation after Kannada actress Ragini Dwivedi's arrest. Constable named Gundappa had reached the spot and was taken by the locals to the plot of land where he found cannabis plants growing up to 4 ft on the entire plot.
The Chitradurga superintendent of police G Radhika also arrived at the spot and had asked to cut down the plants and loaded into a truck for evidence.
The brothers who the plot of land belongs to are residents of Ramapura, DB Manjunath, Y Manjunath and DY Manjunath have maintained that there were unaware regarding the cannabis growing on their land. As per the brothers, Rudresh was to pay them Rs 90,000 a month as rent for the land.
On preliminary investigations, it was found that Rudresh was transporting the drug to other districts across the Karnataka. Meanwhile, the police have arrested a man named Samanthagowda who introduced the brothers to Rudresh.
