Mangaluru, Sep 17: A woman was in dire straits and needed money urgently to save the life of her husband, who was in hospital. Pleas for help made on her behalf through video clips appeared in Facebook and WhatsApp, and evoked magical response. The Tuluvas showed that they can be counted upon when the occasion so demands, by throbbing to the condition of the woman and contributing Rs 14 lac to her account within a day.
Sadly, the woman's effort to save her husband who was suffering from heart disease went in vain as he breathed his last on Wednesday Septmber 16.
Ranjesh Shetty from Karkala was suffering from kidney and heart conditions for a year and the family had already spent Rs 10 lac on his treatment. His conditionn worsened recently and he also had tested positive for coronavirus and was admitted to a private hospital in the city for treatment. The doctors advised him to be admitted into the intensive care unit in view of his critical condition. The family is very poor, and the lady, Geetha, was struggling to pool the money needed.
Due to financial problems, Geetha sold her jewellery for Rs 50,000 to pay forr ICU charges, even as Ranjesh's condition deteriorated. Geetha informed her problems to a person named Kabir who works in a pharmacy, who in turn informed social worker Asif of 'Apathbandava'. Immediately Asif responded and visited the hospital.
Asif recorded a video of Geetha requesting for help and streamed the clip on social media, duly providing mobile and bank account numbers. In the the video, Geetha was seen pleading with people for help to save her husband, and the people readily responded.
The video was posted on social media on Tuesday 8 pm, and went viral immediately. Within 24 hours of the video being uploaded, a whopping Rs 14 lac was credited to Geetha's account. Later Asif circulated one more video thanking every donor for helping the lady.
Aikala Harish Shetty, Global Buntara Sangha president, contributed Rs 50,000 personally immediately after the video was uploaded. On behalf of the Sangha, another Rs 25, 000 was contributed the next day.
But tragically, Geetha's efforts to save her husband went in vain, as he breathed his last on Wednesday.
The family is grief-stricken at the loss but the silver lining is that we have enough people who are ready to help others and there is no dearth of good people who want others to live and be happy like themselves, in spite of an environment of cut throat competition we normally witness in general.
