Kundapur, Sep 17: In an incident that occurred at Gangolli near here on Thursday September 17, a man tried to end his life by pouring petrol on himself.
Raghavendra Kharvi (35), a resident of Dakuhitlu, Khavrikeri, Gangolli tried to self-immolate and was seriously injured as a result.
Scores of devotees had gathered at the Mahamayi Mahasati Temple of Kharvikeri in Gangolli on account of Mahalaya Amavasya. Raghavendra Kharvi also arrived at the temple, and even as the people were watching, he poured petrol on himself. Fire from an open lamp at the temple started immolating Raghavendra within seconds. Those who ran to rescue him also sustained severe burn injuries.
Ibrahim and a team of Apatbhandava ambulance helped in taking the seriously injured Raghavendra Kharvi and others who tried to rescue him to the hospital.
It is said that Raghavendra is critical and is being treated at a hospital in Udupi.
The reason for taking this extreme step is not yet known.
A case in this connection has been registered in Gangolli police station.
