Mangaluru, Sep 17: Dakshina Kannada (DK) deputy commissioner (DC), Dr K V Rajendra, instructed the concerned to accurately assess the noise and air pollution caused by Mangalore Refinery and Petrochemicals Ltd (MRPL) around Jokatte here.
He was speaking at a meeting held on Wednesday September 16 to discuss the problems faced by locals because of the third phase coke and sulphur unit established by MRPL there.The meeting was presided over by the district in-charge minister Kota Srinivas Poojary.
The DC observed that complaints are being received from people living around the said area about the increasing pollution giving rise to problems. He advised MRPL to respond to the issue, give a hearing to the problems of the people and address them.
He noted that Kulur - Jokatte road is full of large sized potholes which have been created because of leading industrial units which use this road. He accordingly instructed Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board officials to get the repair work of the done through the industries. Noting that there are complaints about problems created by heavy vehicles that are seen parked on the road at night, he said the police would be suitably instructed to regulate traffic to avoid accidents.
Minister Kota Srinivas Poojary promised to respond to the complaints of the people from Jokatte area. MLA, Umanath Kotian, said that the locals have been fighting against pollution in their area since several years, and pledged his support to them. He asked the district administration to respond to the needs of the area.
Deputy commissioner of police, Arunangshu Giri, deputy conservator of forests, Dr Karikalan, city (north) assistant comisisoner of police, Belliappa, leaders, Muneer Katipalla, taluk panchayat member, Bashreer Ahmed, officials of MRPL and Special Economic Zone, as well as local leaders were present.
