Bengaluru, Sep 16: Opposition Congress party is first off the block to fight for filling up the vacancy caused by the death of JD(S) MLA B Sathyanarayana from the Sira Assembly constituency in Tumakuru district by announcing the candidature of former law minister T B Jayachandra.
Jayachandra (71), who had served as the Minister in the Congress governments in the past, lost to JD(S) leader Sathyanarayana by a margin of 10,365 votes in the 2018 Assembly elections.
Both the ruling BJP and JD(S) are yet to name their candidates for the seat for which the dates for the by-election have not been announced by the Election Commission so far.
KPCC President D K Shivakumar chaired a meeting with leaders of the Tumakuru district Congress Committee and all leaders have decided to nominate Jayachandra in the by-election.
The by-election in the constituency would be fought under the leadership of former KPCC president and former Deputy Chief Minister Dr G Parameshwara.
This will be the first by-election to be fought by the State Congress unit after the appointment of D K Shivakumar as the KPCC President.
Former MLA K N Rajanna has been named as the co-chairman of the campaign committee, Shivakumar said.
The Election Commission of India is expected to fix the date for by-poll soon.
