Indian flies home after 13 years of overstaying in UAE

Dubai, Sep 15 (IANS): After living in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) for 13 years without any valid documents, an Indian man finally flew home after getting a waiver of nearly half a million dirhams in overstay fines, it was reported.

Pothugonda Medi's repatriation became possible after he sought help from the Indian Consulate in Dubai to avail the ongoing initiative of the UAE government to exempt visa violators from overstay fines, Gulf News said in a report on Monday.

Originally from Hyderabad, Pothugonda told the mission that he had come to the UAE on a visit visa in 2007, but the agent who brought him abandoned him.

He also reported that the agent had not returned his passport, Jithendra Negi, an official at the Indian Consulate, told Gulf News.

However, the Consulate found it difficult to assist Pothugonda immediately because he did not have any official document to prove that he is an Indian citizen.

The mission then sought the help of a social group in Hyderabad to trace Pothugonda's family.

"With the support of a social worker, we managed to get the copies of his old ration card and election ID card from his native place. Some of the details that he gave were not matching, but still we could establish that he is an Indian," Negi told Gulf News.

Apart from the free emergency document, a one-way travel document for Indians without a valid passport, the Consulate also provided the man a free flight ticket.

Indian missions have waived the fees for expats seeking to leave the country during the temporary amnesty period announced by the UAE government which has been extended till November 17.

This Hyderabadi had no document to prove that he was an Indian citizen!

What other official legal document does the Indian Government issues
to each and every Indian citizen, besides a passport.

Every Indian citizen must be issued a legal Citizenship ID Card, rather
than all the other irrelevant cards such as Ration Card, Voter's Card,
Pan Card, Tsunami Card, Aadhar Card, and now a Health Card! None
of these Cards prove one is an Indian citizen especially not abroad!

Finally, the man is able to come back to his place, thank God.

I know a lady, who went on a visiting visa to Canada, some 20 years ago, is still living there comfortably. Unlike Gulf countries, no one asks the ID card or any card in Canada. I heard they cannot get job where documents are needed, However, they can do baby sitting job, give tuition or make cakes and sell. They cannot get driving licence, free medical treatment and social security pension at 65. I heard, if found, Canada does not put them to jail, but only sends them back to the country of the person.

Canada is not an utopia but a very civilized country where citizens are well taken care off by a good government. And with high institutions of education, hospitals, courts, justice, good governance and above all peace etc. Etc.

Sunny: I don’t know all the in’s and out’s stated in visitor’s visa. It is primarily meant to visit relatives, see the country , travel related to business etc. There are diff. Types of visas. There is one even related to briefly work etc. To broaden one so training etc.
But breaking the rules is not permitted. You can baby sit your relatives’ children but not take it up as a job!

    Is it unfair?
