Mangaluru, Sep 14: Dr M Ramgopal Shetty, eminent vascular surgeon and founder of Dr MV Shetty Memorial Trust, passed away on Monday September 14. He was 75.
Born on June 12, 1945 in Mangaluru, Dr M R Shetty completed his early education from St Aloysius High School here and pursued his graduate and postgraduate professional education from Kasturba Medical College (KMC), Mangaluru. He then went to UK on a vascular surgery fellowship, and on his return, served as assistant professor in surgery at KMC.
Dr Shetty founded the Dr MV Memorial Trust in 1985 and devoted himself to it completely. The Trust continues to impart quality education in the field of health sciences and rendering health services to the needy people of the society. Dr M R Shetty served as secretary and executive officer of the Trust.
Since 1979, he had been the vascular surgeon in the Government District Hospital, Mangaluru. Besides, he was involved in the field of university education as member of Academic Council and Syndicate of Mangalore University and was elected as its member for four terms from 1982. He was instrumental in introducing many vocational courses such as physiotherapy, speech and hearing and hospital administration under Mangalore University, for the first time in Karnataka state.
His surgical specialty unit of peripheral vascular surgery continues to function at Government Wenlock Hospital bringing affordable specialised surgical care to the needy people.
He also served as executive member in the Rehabilitation Council of India.
Dr M R Shetty was a visionary who strived to not only provide quality health services and enable training of professionals in each of the allied medical fields, but also in educating the public and providing affordable diagnostic and therapeutic facilities in collaboration with the government especially to those in need. Keeping the needy in mind, he also initiated the blood bank at the Wenlock hospital. It may be said that his contribution has been vital in transforming the paramedical scene in Karnataka state as well in India.
He was a keen sports enthusiast and conducted the first Satellite ATP Tournament in Mangaluru in 1987, which was a huge success. He was also responsible for conducting all-India inter-university tennis tournaments under Mangalore University.
Dr Shetty is suvived by wife Prof Hima Urmila Shetty, a professor in English literature, and two daughters.
The funeral will be held between 11 am and 1 pm on Monday in the city, sources said.
