Bantwal: Illegal redstone mining carried out unabated at historical place

Bantwal, Sep 7: Public have accused that red stone mining is running unabated at Kotethadka hill area which comes under Alike and Peruvai gram panchayat limits of the taluk. Locals have even tried to stop this activity. They have even written letters to the Prime Minister, chief minister and mining and geology departments. However, no action is taken so far, it is alleged. The place where this activity is going on is a historical place known as Panadavara Kote.

Locals are saying that this illegal red stone mining activity is going on for the past four years at a location which is 2 km from Kuddupadavu on the road that connects Kasargod from Kalladka.

This red stone mining is going on in 25 acres of government land which belongs to cashew corporation and cow grazing (Gomaala). In addition to red stones, now the mud is also extracted and sent to Andhra Pradesh. Roads of this locality have been completely damaged because of the continuous plying of trucks with a heavy load. Locals are having health issues due to continuous inhalation of mud.

Locals have resorted to holding a protest against the illegal activity. They are also mulling to hold fierce protests in coming days if the administration does not heed to their plea.

    This is big mud mafiya around bantwala and Mudipu area which is supported by government official by giving them permission to level the land. If it is not controlled now, this will become another ballary.

    Please put a PIL to HC and see the result. All are using it for trivial issues; however, this is a wake up call for so called responsible officials who are taking bribe and close their eyes for these illegal activities.

    Selling soil is as good as selling our own children which must not allowed at any cost. There must be strict rule even to remove soil from one village to another. Let the development happen according to the topography of the land not digging one place and filling another. this way we are going to destroy 2 places at the same time. removing the top soil will make the place useless on long run - Only Govt or Panchayat must plan a water body such as lakes or ponds to remove the soil if needed any soil for any places. This way there will be 2 advantage- 1 the land required will be filled and at the same time, we will have a lake ( aquifier ) in the place were we obtain soil. This is how our ancestors build lakes - they were ways for dual purpose. ( This must be done mostly in very local places not transporting from state to state, district to district) .
