Bantwal, Sep 7: Public have accused that red stone mining is running unabated at Kotethadka hill area which comes under Alike and Peruvai gram panchayat limits of the taluk. Locals have even tried to stop this activity. They have even written letters to the Prime Minister, chief minister and mining and geology departments. However, no action is taken so far, it is alleged. The place where this activity is going on is a historical place known as Panadavara Kote.
Locals are saying that this illegal red stone mining activity is going on for the past four years at a location which is 2 km from Kuddupadavu on the road that connects Kasargod from Kalladka.
This red stone mining is going on in 25 acres of government land which belongs to cashew corporation and cow grazing (Gomaala). In addition to red stones, now the mud is also extracted and sent to Andhra Pradesh. Roads of this locality have been completely damaged because of the continuous plying of trucks with a heavy load. Locals are having health issues due to continuous inhalation of mud.
Locals have resorted to holding a protest against the illegal activity. They are also mulling to hold fierce protests in coming days if the administration does not heed to their plea.
